Stepping into the building Monday, I tell myself I'm making my choice this week.
Derek's bar won't wait forever before they hire someone else. I need to get my head on straight and figure this out, and deep inside, I know what I want to do.
Conner's publishing team deposited the first check into my bank account this morning. It was bigger than I expected, too.
Should I tell Diane today? I could put a two-week notice in and let Derek know I could start training right after that. With the next two checks, plus the checks from the solo dates I would be okay until the tips started to roll in.
I won't have much money to spend for a while, though. But that could change. Maybe I could save some cash like Conner suggested, even if the idea of a budget makes me cringe.
I love decorating houses, though, and I never even thought about doing something like that for a career. Could I really work my way up to my dream house? Last night, I spent hours looking at sites with homes for sale to get an idea of costs and stuff like that. Then, I binged a bunch of House Hunters episodes, which made me even more excited about this idea.
Damn it, this check in my bank was a sign. I need to stop arguing with the old me and the new me and just do this.
A knot forms in my stomach, and my hands grow clammy. Will Diane be upset? What if she asks me to stay or even offers me a raise?
Tell her you need time to think it over, I hear Conner's voice in my head, and it calms me down.
As I turn the corner, I notice my team all standing in the corridor with Diane, who looks really dressed up today in a blue blazer pantsuit.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"We have a meeting," Candice explains just as a few higher-ups come from around the corner. They motion for us to follow, and we all walk to the big conference room.
I sit next to Candice, which puts me across from Justin. He has a weird, smirky look on his face, and I'm growing more curious by the moment.
Diane stands up front, and the two big wigs stand with her. The door opens, and I raise an eyebrow when Katie walks in. She's not on our direct team, so why is she here? I glance at Candice, who shrugs.
"Good morning, everyone. I know it's early, but I promise we'll keep this short." Bill Brennon commands the attention of the room as he speaks. He is pretty high up in the company. I think he has the title of executive account manager or something. He's basically in charge of all the account managers, who are in charge of the supervisors. Everyone has a boss around here.
"As you know, Diane has been with our company a long time, and she has led your team to be one of the top in numbers for several months in a row."
"Great job, everyone truly," the other bigwig, Matt Diller, says next. Matt is an account manager and is Diane's direct boss. "As you all know, we prefer to promote from within whenever possible, and when a spot opened up for an account manager, it only made sense to consider our top supervisor for the role."
