The remaining villagers, those who stood their ground and refused to evacuate, remained. Even in this wreckage, a paltry few were determined to stay. Knights were stationed at their posts with nobody's demand. The village was in anarchy. Everybody agreed not to mention the unspoken truth, that the village would never be the same.

The angry mob surrounded the village. A rogue knight lead the pack.

"Are you the one that lost the sacrifice? If she is not found, the heads of your family shall be proudly displayed, impaled at the gates!"

The crowd roared, some in anger, some in agreement.

Linda cried, "Spare me! I've been watching her closely, but that horrific witch left our home to burn! She is the one to blame."

Murmurs of the witch rose through the surviving crowd. This would be Linda's one and only opportunity to escape.

"That witch did this to our village! Look what she has done to our home. She must be executed." Linda shouted, "Burned by the flames that gouged us! That witch belongs in hell. This is her trick! She's diverting our attention."

The villagers were eager to latch onto a new target. Their logic was filled with anger and hatred. Their home, their families, and everything they've worked for was destroyed. The villagers knew Linda. They knew she always took care of the sacrifice. The witch was easy to blame, an outsider with a dangerous fire.

"They must be nearby!" Linda shouted, "Do not be fooled. The witch is our true enemy!"

Pretty turned back to Elegant, fear ever lurking in her eyes. Elegant was the only one Miss Perfect can trust. She can't go back. There's no place for them anymore.

"Our sins are inescapable," Miss Perfect whispered. "I'll be the one for them to blame. Elegant, run away and hide! I'm Miss Perfect, they won't hurt me."

Elegant couldn't take her eyes away from the ground. She pondered, "Once a bird is out of the cage, it won't go back in. What happens to me doesn't matter!" She finally made eye contact. "I just want you to live a happy life, Pretty. One with friends, a family, and your own passions. But circumstances have led to this. What I speak of is a stupid, idealistic dream."

Fire encircled the two, the embers gently prickling the ground. They lived in their own world, as their past one was destroyed.

"Elegant, I'm thankful and all, but why are you helping me?"

"Do I have to have a reason?" She grabbed Pretty's hand. "We're in the same boat, after all. This power that burns all...it can save everyone but myself."

"That isn't true!" Miss Perfect protested, "We promised, we'd make a home together!"

Elegant was shaking. She curled her hands into fists. "What does it feel to be redeemed? Or to be pure-hearted, never needing redemption? Could we escape our fates without the bloodshed? I don't know. But I want to find out."

Pretty screamed, "It's all my fault. Al because of these stupid eyes...they put everyone here in danger!"

Eyes. That one word defined her life, but Pretty's the most. She was the destined one, after all. Her eyes were stained with the blood of rubies and a dying rose. What were eyes, anyway? A noun, a pair of organs that allowed us to see. They were a blessing to all those lucky to have them.

But there's no changing the fate of the unfortunate.

"Eyes? Yes, you're correct," Elegant roared. She dug her nails into her fist, blood dripping onto the soil. The red mixed with the purple glow as her finger stole her Ruby Eyes. "I've been coveting them since the first day we met."
