"I told you that you cannot run for long little girl."
Ditta's eyes snapped open. She had another nightmare. But it was different this time.
Her nightmare was about what happened in the hallway before she passed out.
But in this nightmare, he caught her.
Ditta's breath came in short gasps as she tried to slow down her racing heart, she didn't want Mitchell to notice that she had another nightmare.
She had assured Mitchell before that the nightmares had stopped.
'Calm down, its just a nightmare. Just breathe.'
She took deep breaths to slow down her racing heart and sat up on the bed slowly. She didn't want to wake up Mitchell.
She stood up and quietly walked to the bathroom. She splashed water on her face and looked at her reflection. Her brown hair was knotted and tangled, a reflection of her restless sleep and her pale skin looked even paler.
She attempted to smile but it faltered. She squeezed her eyes shut and opened them slowly trying to get those words out of her head.
The words echoed in her mind, a haunting refrain that refused to fade- "I told you that you cannot run for long little girl."
She sighed, then leaned her back against the wall and slowly slid down. She sat on the floor with her eyes closed, her head leaning on the wall and her knees folded against her chest.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw amber eyes staring at her. She was not even shocked.
She would have been startled had it been two years ago, but over the last couple of years, she had gotten used to eyes staring at her from the darkness.
She stared back at the eyes that were staring at her from the shadows. She just noticed that she had not turned on the light when she entered the bathroom.
Oddly, the darkness didn't hinder her sight.
The bathroom normally had a calming atmosphere, with a predominantly white and brown color scheme. She could see it clearly, even in the dark.
She could see everything.
Everything but where the eyes were.
She could only see the amber eyes staring at her from the dark.
She continued to stare. For some reason, the eyes did not make her apprehensive. Her shoulders eased, and her breathing slowed as she gazed into the amber eyes.
She felt like the eyes were familiar.
She felt a connection and could not look away.
The bathroom's familiar scent of lavender and vanilla filled her nostrils as she sat on the floor and gazed into the eyes.
The amber eyes seemed to hold a deep wisdom, as if they had seen beyond the darkness. The eyes seemed to stare at her soul through her eyes.
She could practically feel the owner of the eyes calling for her.
Ditta stood up, her eyes fixed on the amber eyes. She took a step forward, her heart pounding. The bathroom's calm atmosphere enveloped her, but she felt a thrill of excitement.
She didn't even notice that she hadn't even blinked during this time.
She took another step forward. her heart was still pounding when the sudden influx of light into the dark room made Ditta raise her hand to shield her eyes.
As she adjusted to the blinding brightness, she saw Mitchell standing in the doorway, a concerned expression on her face. But her gaze was drawn back to the spot where the amber eyes had been.
They were gone.
She placed her hand over her heart as she felt like it had been squeezed.
"Ditta, are you okay?" Mitchell asked nearly in a whisper, her brows furrowed and voice laced with worry.
Mitchell's voice snapped Ditta out of her reverie. She slowly removed her hand from her chest and smiled reassuringly at her bestfriend of nearly ten years.
She took a step forward and clenched her feet, noticing for the first time that her feet were bare.
The brown hardwood floor sent a chill up her feet.
"Ditta?" Mitchell called, the wrinkles between her brows deepened.
"Are you okay? You've been in here for a long time." she said as she took a step into the now lit bathroom.
"Uhm.. " Ditta looked back at the now empty spot between the brown dustbin and the white toilet bowl and frowned.
She looked back at Mitchell's furrowed brows and shook her head.
"I'm fine" She clenched her fists at her sides noticing the clamminess of her palms.
"I'm fine, I just-" She swallowed. She suddenly felt sick in her stomach.
"I just-" She looked back at the spot feeling the grip on her heart squeeze harder.
-"I told you that you cannot run for long little girl."- echoed in her mind.
Suddenly, the room was spinning. She tried to take a step forward but instead felt her head race towards the floor.
As Mitchell's scream echoed in her ears, Ditta's vision faded to black and everything went dark.
