Alex's only escape was the internet. Online, she could be anyone, say anything, and for the first time in her life, she felt seen. It was there that she found her tribe-people who didn't judge her for who she was, who didn't tell her she was wrong or broken. They accepted her as Alex, the bisexual demigirl with a heart full of love and pain.

That's where she met Avery.

Avery was everything Alex needed-a beacon of light in the darkness. They met in an LGBTQIA+ chatroom, and from the moment they started talking, Alex felt a connection she hadn't known was possible. Avery was genderfluid, lesbian, aroace, and living halfway across the world in New Zealand. Despite the distance, Avery became Alex's best friend, the one person she could be completely honest with. Avery listened when Alex cried, understood when she vented, and encouraged her to be brave.

It was Avery who first suggested that Alex come out to her brothers. "They love you," Avery had typed. "They'll accept you, I promise."

And it was Avery who convinced her to confess her feelings to Jessie, no matter how scared she was. "You deserve to live openly, Alex. You deserve to love."
