13 YEARS ON
Jin-joo
I closed my eyes, trying to recall a glimpse of him again in my head. I could only picture his dangling earrings. His black hair falling over his face. His light red orbs, and his coat That's all I could recall of him over the years, mostly that night when he had saved me from that werewolf.
I pleaded with him to leave that memory with me. He had once wiped my memory during my parents' accident, but when I saw him that night…looking into his eyes brought it back. I have wondered over the years who he is? I also wondered if I was just hallucinating like my friends says when I tell them the story, mostly the werewolf part.
But it's so real to be some hallucination. I have been praying over the years to see him once again, but he doesn't show up. My heart aches each time I wish for him and he doesn't come, it makes me believe that maybe it has been my hallucination all along.
But I do have drawings of him plastered all over the walls of my bedroom so I won't forget his image in my head over the years.
“Hey, Jin-joo!”
I got startled out of my thoughts by Hye-rin and Bitna’s voice. Hye-rin and Bitna are my best friends, we’ve been best friends since elementary school and now we are in the same high school.
“What are you thinking about?” Hye-rin asked, sitting on my school desk.
Hye-rin is really pretty with her Fringes, she makes all the school boys turn their heads to her. Aside from that, she's cheerful and rarely sad…she's like a perfect girl. I envy her and her perfection a bit.
“No I wasn't thinking, I was reading.” I said, looking at the textbook on my desk.
“Are you sure because it’s turned downwards, or is it the new reading style?” Bitna asked, making me frown at her.
Bitna is also beautiful, but not to be compared to Hye-rin. Bitna is a bit chubby, making it somewhat hard for a guy to pick interest in her. Her words though. She eats a lot, but cheerful and kinda clumsy sometimes.
“Let me guess, you were thinking of your hero from childhood?” Hye-rin said, making me roll my eyes at her.
Why does she have to be too good at guessing too?
“Come on Jin-joo. All of that is just in your head, can't you drop it already?” Bitna said.
“Jeez, I wasn't thinking about him okay?” I said, closing my book.
“Okay, whatever. Will you be coming for the gathering?” Hye-rin asked, making me frown.
“What gathering?” I asked, confused.
“Oh my God, Jin-joo! Don't tell me you forgot about the gathering discussion over our group chat last night?” Hye-rin said, staring at me in disbelief.
Sincerely I’ve forgotten about that because I was busy praying as usual for him to show up.
“How will she remember when she was thinking about her childhood hero last night.” Bitna said, bringing out a candy bar and unwrapping it.
“Really, Jin-joo?” Hye-rin said in disbelief.
“You know you can tell me about it again rather than staring at me like that.” I said, trying to avoid eye contacts with her.
She sighs.
“The senior gathering tonight.” Hye-rin said, I frown.
“But we are not seniors until next year, so why are we going to the gathering?” I asked, confused.
“You know that senior guy that has been sending Hye-rin love letters and flowers, he invited her to be his date to the gathering.” Bitna explained.
“And I asked him if I could invite you guys and he agreed to it.” Hye-rin said.
“Oh…now I remember our group chat conversation last night.” I said, but looked away when I caught Hye-rin giving me a scary glare.
“So are you coming?” Bitna asked.
“No.” I said.
“Why?” Both of them asked at the same time.
“Because I have two part time jobs to attend to immediately after school. And before that, I need to take grand-pa for his arthritis medical check-up.” I explained to them as I packed my textbooks into my backpack.
“Are you serious right now? You know that senior, Seo-jun, who is so into you? He’s going to be there, something might kick off between you guys if you show up.” Hye-rin said.
Seo-jun is one of the hot seniors in this school. To be honest, I liked and admired how perfect he is because he has good grades and he’s so good at soccer. He’s like the perfect version of Hye-rin. I thought the both of them would pair up because they seem perfect for each other, but Hye-rin keeps saying she usually catches a glimpse of him staring at me sometimes.
But I doubt her. He could be staring at some girl close to me and not me. I’m too ugly and dumb for a hot senior like Seo-jun to like me. Hye-rin’s just talking nonsense.
“Come on Jin-joo, say something…say you’ll be there.” Hye-rin pleaded.
“I really want to, but I can't avoid losing my job or having grand-pa missing his medical appointments.”
“Come on Jin-joo. Me and Hye-rin can't go without you…it's like breaking our girl code of doing things together.” Bitna said cutely, making me chuckle.
“It's okay guys. I’m totally cool with it. Just gist me on how it all went on our group chat, okay?” I said, giving them a big smile before leaving with my backpack.
I wish I could go, but I have two jobs that help me pay my tuition fees and I can't afford to lose it and go through the trouble of finding another. And there's grand-pa and his check-up. His arthritis seemed to have gotten worse in the past week, so I need to take him to see his doctor.
I’ve been living with my grandparents since the death of my parents. So my grandparents are my everything right now and I can't afford anything happening to either of them.
Sighs.
