Kang Y/N and Kang Yeosang had always been inseparable, though neither of them would ever admit it. Growing up as next-door neighbors, their lives were intertwined in ways that made them more like siblings than mere acquaintances. From the moment they could walk, Y/N and Yeosang found themselves thrown together by fate—or rather, by the scheming of their mothers, who were best friends since college.

Y/N and Yeosang's earliest memories were filled with bickering over the smallest things. One such memory stood out vividly to Y/N as she stared out her bedroom window, looking over at Yeosang's house next door.

Flashbacks

"Mom! Yeosang won't let me swing!" Y/N had shouted at the top of her lungs, her tiny hands gripping the edge of the wooden swing set in Yeosang's backyard. Her mother, who had been chatting with Yeosang's mother over tea, looked up with a sigh.

"Yeosang, share the swing with Y/N," his mother had called out from the porch, giving him a pointed look.

"But it's my swing!" Yeosang had protested, crossing his arms stubbornly.

"It's our swing!" Y/N had shot back, her hands on her hips as she glared at him.

Their mothers exchanged knowing smiles, watching as the two children argued over what seemed like the most important issue in the world at that moment.

Eventually, after a few more rounds of back-and-forth, they compromised—Y/N would get to swing first, but Yeosang would push her, and then they'd switch. It was the first of many negotiations the two would have to make over the years, but even then, there was an underlying bond that neither of them recognized.

As they grew older, the arguments didn't stop. In fact, they only seemed to multiply.

Middle school days

"Why do we always have to do things together?" Yeosang grumbled as they walked to school one morning. It was the first day of middle school, and to both of their dismay, they had been placed in the same class.

Y/N rolled her eyes, adjusting the straps of her backpack. "You think I want to be stuck with you all the time? Trust me, if I had a choice, I wouldn't pick you as my partner for every project."

"Then why did you?" he shot back, his voice edged with frustration.

"Because the teacher made us!" Y/N huffed. "And for the record, I'd much rather be partnered with someone who actually does their work instead of just goofing off."

Yeosang scowled. "I don't goof off!"

"Sure, keep telling yourself that," Y/N retorted, speeding up her pace so she wouldn't have to hear his rebuttal.

Despite their constant bickering, there was an unspoken understanding between them. They were always paired up because, deep down, they worked well together. Whether it was a class project or cleaning up after school as class presidents—a role they ended up sharing more than once—Y/N and Yeosang somehow managed to balance each other out.

They complained about each other endlessly to their friends, but everyone knew that their arguments were just a part of their unique dynamic. It was almost as if they thrived on their differences, pushing each other to be better even if neither would admit it.

When Y/N's mother had to travel for work, which happened often, Y/N would stay with Yeosang's family. At first, Yeosang was less than thrilled about the arrangement.

"Why does she have to stay here?" he whined as his mother set up a makeshift bed for Y/N in the guest room.

"Because she's like family, Yeosang," his mother replied patiently, smoothing out the blankets. "And besides, you two get along well enough."
