Anna's POV*

The day of the talent showcase finally arrived, bringing with it a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation. As I walked into the school auditorium, the air buzzed with energy. Students were milling about, practicing their acts, adjusting their costumes, and sharing last-minute words of encouragement. But all I could think about was the conversation I'd planned to have with Shashwat afterward.

My painting was already set up backstage, waiting for its moment in the spotlight. It was a piece I had poured my heart into-a portrait of a woman standing under a full moon, her expression a mix of sorrow and strength, her eyes reflecting the light of the night sky. It was a representation of everything I'd been feeling lately, and I hoped it would resonate with the audience.

As I was making my final preparations, Maya rushed up to me, looking uncharacteristically flustered.

"Anna! Have you seen Raj?" she asked, her voice tinged with worry.

"Not since this morning. Why?" I replied, surprised by her anxious tone.

"He's gone missing. No one's seen him since lunch, and he was supposed to be helping with the sound setup," she explained, her eyes wide.

A knot of unease formed in my stomach. Raj wasn't the type to disappear without a word. He was always reliable, always there when you needed him. The fact that he was missing now, on such an important day, didn't sit right with me.

"Maybe he's just running late or got caught up with something," I suggested, trying to reassure her.

"I hope so," Maya said, though she didn't sound convinced. "But it's not like him to just vanish like this."

Before we could discuss it further, the showcase began, and we were ushered to our seats. One by one, students went up on stage, showing off their talents-singing, dancing, playing instruments. The audience clapped and cheered, but I could hardly focus. My mind kept drifting back to Raj, and the uneasy feeling that something was wrong.

Finally, it was my turn. As I walked onto the stage, my painting was revealed to the audience. There was a collective gasp, followed by applause, but I barely registered it. My eyes scanned the crowd, searching for Shashwat, for any sign that Raj had returned.

And then I saw him-Shashwat, standing at the back of the auditorium, his expression unreadable. Our eyes met, and for a moment, everything else faded away. But then, something changed in his gaze, something that made my blood run cold. It was as if a shadow had passed over his face, darkening his usually warm expression.

After the showcase, I hurried backstage, my heart pounding. I had to find Shashwat, had to talk to him, figure out what was going on. But when I reached the hallway, he was already there, waiting for me.

"Shashwat, what's going on? Where's Raj?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and confusion.

He didn't answer right away. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. He handed it to me, his eyes filled with an emotion I couldn't quite place-regret? Pain?

I unfolded the paper, my hands shaking. It was a note, written in Raj's familiar handwriting, but the words made my heart stop.

*"Anna, by the time you read this, I'll be gone. There's something I need to do, something I can't explain right now. I'm sorry I couldn't be there for your showcase, but this is important. Please, don't try to find me. I promise, I'll explain everything when the time is right. Take care of yourself, and know that I'm doing this for a reason. - Raj."*

I stared at the note, my mind reeling. Gone? What did he mean, gone? Where had he gone, and why couldn't he tell us?

"Shashwat, what is this? What's happening?" I demanded, looking up at him, my voice cracking.

"I don't know all the details, Anna. Raj... he told me a little bit before he left. Something about needing to find answers, to protect someone. He wouldn't tell me more, just that he had to go alone," Shashwat said, his voice heavy with sorrow.

"Protect someone? From what? This doesn't make any sense!" I exclaimed, the frustration and fear boiling over.

"I know," Shashwat replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "But whatever it is, it's serious. He made me promise not to follow him, not to get involved."

Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring my vision. This wasn't how things were supposed to go. We were supposed to be celebrating, supposed to be together. But now, Raj was gone, and Shashwat was standing here, looking like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

"Anna... there's something else," Shashwat said, hesitating as if unsure whether to continue.

"What is it?" I asked, my heart sinking even further.

"Raj... he asked me to look after you, to make sure you're safe. He didn't say why, but I think... I think he was worried that whatever he's dealing with might come back to you," Shashwat said, his voice trembling slightly.

I stared at him, the realization slowly dawning on me. This wasn't just about Raj leaving. There was something bigger, something dangerous that we were all caught up in. And whatever it was, it was far from over.

But before I could say anything, the lights in the hallway flickered, plunging us into darkness for a moment. When they came back on, a figure stood at the end of the hallway, shrouded in shadows. I couldn't make out their face, but the presence alone sent a chill down my spine.

"Anna, get behind me," Shashwat whispered urgently, stepping in front of me, his body tense and ready.

The figure took a step forward, and as they did, a strange, cold wind swept through the hallway, carrying with it a whisper-a sound that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere all at once.

"Your painting... it's the key," the voice said, low and haunting.

My heart raced as I clutched Shashwat's arm, fear gripping me. The figure reached out a hand, pointing directly at me.

"Find the truth before it finds you," the voice continued, before the figure suddenly vanished, as if they had never been there at all.

I stood frozen, unable to move, unable to comprehend what had just happened. The hallway was silent again, but the weight of the words hung in the air.

"Anna... we need to get out of here," Shashwat said, his voice steady but urgent.

I nodded numbly, letting him lead me away. My mind was a whirlwind of confusion, fear, and a creeping sense of dread. Whatever this was, whatever Raj had gotten himself into, it was clear now that we were all in danger.

As we stepped outside into the cool night air, I looked up at the moon, its pale light casting eerie shadows on the ground. The woman in my painting had looked up at this same moon, her eyes filled with sorrow and strength. Now, I felt the weight of that sorrow, and the fear that I might not have the strength to face whatever was coming.

But one thing was clear: the peaceful life I had known was over. And the path ahead was filled with darkness, secrets, and danger that I could never have imagined.
