Anna's POV*
Darkness. An all-consuming blackness surrounded me, heavy and thick, pressing against my skin. My senses felt dulled, as though I were submerged in a deep, inky sea. I tried to move, but my body felt weightless, disconnected from reality. It was as if I were caught between worlds-neither awake nor asleep.
A faint, pulsing light began to break through the darkness, drawing me toward it. I didn't know where I was or what had happened, but the light was warm, comforting. Instinctively, I reached out, desperate for something familiar in this sea of uncertainty.
As my fingers touched the light, memories flooded back-fragments of the night, the forest, Raj's frantic words, the woman in black. And then, the sharp pain of losing consciousness, of being taken. The panic I had felt returned, but this time, it was tempered by the presence of the light, soothing me, guiding me back.
I opened my eyes.
I was lying on a cold stone floor, the rough texture pressing into my back. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and something else-something metallic, like blood. Slowly, I pushed myself up, my muscles stiff and aching. My head throbbed, and the room around me spun as I tried to focus.
"Anna," a voice called out, weak but familiar.
I turned sharply, the room finally coming into focus. Shashwat was slumped against the wall, his face pale, a trickle of blood seeping from a cut on his forehead. His eyes were filled with relief as they met mine.
"Shashwat!" I scrambled over to him, kneeling by his side. "Are you okay? What happened? Where are we?"
"I'm not sure," he muttered, wincing as he tried to sit up straighter. "We were attacked. That woman... she did something to us. I don't remember much after that."
I looked around, trying to make sense of our surroundings. We were in some sort of underground chamber, the walls rough and uneven, the only light coming from a few flickering torches mounted on the walls. It was cold, the chill seeping into my bones.
"Raj," I whispered, my heart sinking as I remembered what had happened to him. "Where's Raj?"
Shashwat shook his head, his expression grim. "They took him. I don't know where, but... it didn't look good, Anna."
Tears stung my eyes as I struggled to hold them back. Raj had been trying to protect us, and now he was in the hands of those who wanted something from him-something he said was tied to me. The weight of that realization settled over me like a heavy cloak.
"We have to find him," I said firmly, forcing myself to stand. "We can't just leave him with them. He's our only chance of getting out of here."
Shashwat nodded, his face set with determination despite his injuries. "I agree, but we need to be smart about this. We have no idea what they want with him-or you. And if Raj was right, they're after something bigger than just us."
I helped Shashwat to his feet, supporting his weight as he steadied himself. As we moved toward the only exit-a narrow, dimly lit passageway-I couldn't shake the feeling that we were walking into a trap. But there was no other choice. We had to find Raj and figure out what was really going on.
The passage was long and winding, the walls closing in around us as we ventured deeper into the underground labyrinth. The further we went, the more the oppressive feeling of being watched grew. Shadows seemed to move just beyond the edge of the torchlight, and every creak and whisper echoed like a ghostly reminder that we were not alone.
At the end of the passage, we came to a large, heavy door, its surface adorned with strange, ancient symbols. It radiated a faint, pulsing energy that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
"This must be it," Shashwat whispered, his voice barely audible. "Whatever's behind this door... it has to be connected to everything Raj was talking about."
I nodded, my heart pounding in my chest as I reached for the door. It felt cold under my fingers, the energy within it thrumming with a life of its own. Taking a deep breath, I pushed it open.
What lay beyond took my breath away.
The chamber was vast, its ceiling disappearing into darkness. In the center stood a massive stone altar, its surface etched with the same symbols as the door. Above it, suspended in mid-air, was a glowing crystal-pulsing with a dark, ominous light. Around the altar stood the woman in black and several of her followers, their faces hidden in the shadows.
And there, bound and kneeling before the altar, was Raj.
"Raj!" I cried out, rushing forward before Shashwat could stop me.
The woman turned, a cruel smile spreading across her face. "Ah, the girl of the hour. I was wondering when you'd join us."
Her voice was dripping with malice, and the air around her crackled with dark energy. I could feel its pull, its hunger, and it terrified me.
"What do you want with him?" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady. "What do you want with us?"
The woman's smile widened. "You'll see soon enough. You're about to witness something truly magnificent-the awakening of a power that's been dormant for centuries. And you, my dear, are the key to it all."
Raj's eyes met mine, filled with a mix of fear and regret. "Anna, don't listen to her. You have to get out of here-now!"
But before I could respond, the woman raised her hand, and the air around us exploded with energy. The ground beneath me shook, and I was thrown backward, the force of the blast knocking the wind out of me.
As I struggled to regain my footing, I saw the crystal above the altar begin to glow brighter, its light intensifying as the symbols on the altar flared to life. The energy in the room was palpable, a dark, ancient power that sent a chill down my spine.
"Let the awakening begin," the woman intoned, her voice echoing through the chamber. "The power of the moon, the power of the ancient ones-rise and fulfill your destiny!"
The crystal's light shot out, enveloping Raj in its glow. He cried out in pain, his body writhing as the energy coursed through him. I screamed his name, but the sound was drowned out by the roar of the power being unleashed.
And then, as suddenly as it began, the light vanished. The chamber fell silent, the energy dissipating into the air like smoke.
Raj collapsed to the ground, his body still, his breathing shallow.
I ran to his side, tears streaming down my face. "Raj, no... please, don't leave me."
But as I touched his hand, a surge of energy shot through me, and I was thrown back once again, the force of it slamming me into the wall. The pain was immediate and blinding, but through the haze, I saw the crystal begin to pulse again-this time, directed at me.
And in that moment, I understood.
I was the key. The power they sought was within me.
And now, there was no escaping it.
