Tornado season was a time filled with fear and uncertainty for those living in Tornado Alley, the likelihood of a single rain storm turning into a dark twisting cloud of terror is at an all time high.

Growing up in Tornado Alley, Mae Harding never did feel the fear others felt at the very real threat of a tornado. When the sirens sounded she felt adrenaline and excitement.

At a very young age Mae was introduced to the beauty and complexity that was a tornado, having the infamous Jo and Bill Harding as her parents gave her a different perspective on one of natures most destructive forces.

Though Jo and Bill passionate about their careers, they wanted to be parents to their little girl and not risk leaving her as an orphan to continue chasing.

Instead they would focus on reviewing data that their team collected in the field and use their partnerships with the National Weather Service to monitor and analyze tornados in hopes of getting a more advanced and reliable warning system.

Dorothy's data from back in 1996 helped set the stage for their early warning system, they were even able to increase warning time to 15 minutes. But the thirst for more knowledge and desire to keep their home state safe fueled Jo and Bill's drive to push their research further.

Mae had been fascinated by tornados and thunderstorms since she was a child, when she was only four years old one of her parents coworkers Dusty had taken her to the park when a EF 2 touched down.

To this day, she still remembers holding on to Dusty tightly as he grabbed her and ran for shelter. The whole time she was looking over his shoulder and watching the approaching tornado in awe.

It was fate that Mae would grow up with a love and passion for weather.

Since that day, Mae was always peaking over her parent's shoulders looking at their work with more interest than anyone else.

After graduating high school, Mae decided to attend Muskogee State University and study meteorology following in her parent's footsteps.

It was only a bonus that her cousin Kate, whose mom is Bill's older sister, decided to go with her to school. Both of them had a special gift when it came to storms and they wanted to use that gift to help people.

Mae remembered looking over her parents notes, how they came up with the idea of Dorothy to track a tornado's formation and get an earlier warning system developed with the hope of helping people get more time to prepare and get to shelter before the tornado hits.
