CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
──-ˋˏ☂︎ˎˊ-──

THE FIRST thing Freya did, naturally, was call her husband. And when he did not answer, she sent him approximately thirteen texts and left the work day early in fear of uncontrollable fires starting, or an accidental hurricane in her office.

"Told you," she heard Stephanie gloating when Freya left the firm. "She's too hungover."

Control yourself, Freya thought. She hadn't had her powers in six years, and now that she did, they felt different, less like hers and more like they would do whatever they desired on their own. She did not need to burn down the entire building just because of a petty co-worker.

She pulled up to the empty house, car parked in the driveway. She did not move, eyes squeezed shut in attempt to fight back the vomit that threatened to escape, until she heard tires pull up behind her.

Relieved at the sight of Diego's work vehicle, she climbed out and reached for him. He was frantic, too, clutching her arm and gaze narrowed with concern. "Freya-"

"My powers," she interrupted him. "I made a fucking vine grow- do you-"

"Yes," he confirmed. "Yes, and we need to figure out what is going on."

So they did just that—in the former Hargreeves home. It wasn't long before they were all there, arguing and yelling at one another and demanding answers.

"Someone explain what the hell is going on here, quick," Viktor stated, stumbling in and looking just as frazzled as the rest of them felt.

"Well, Viktor, that's what we're all trying to figure out."

"Don't look at me," Luther said, wearing nothing but a speedo and a robe.

"Nobody's blaming you, Luther."

"No, I mean, don't look at me. I'm hideous."

"Is it too late to apologize for calling you ape-man?" Freya asked, hand on her stomach.

"Look, at least you're back to your old self. The rest of us feel like we've had motor-oil injected into our veins."

"It's so strange," Klaus mused, standing alone. Freya braced herself on the back of the couch, Diego's familiar touch attempting to soothe her lower back by moving his hand in a small circle. It did not help. "Because I, for once, feel fantastic."

"Yeah, well, you think you've got problems?" Lila asked, stood at the door. "Look at this."

Before any of them could react, green light shone from her eyes, and broke everything she looked at into pieces like actual lasers. Freya shrieked, ducking with the others.

"Hey, hey! Not inside!"

"TURN IT OFF!"

"I don't know how!" Lila yelled. Then, it stopped. When Freya straightened to her feet, she spotted every item Lila had destroyed, light fixtures were broken, and glass was all over the floor. "There. Oh, sorry about that."

"That's what you say when you mess up someone's food order, Lila," Freya gawked. "This is..."

"Be careful," Five told them, avoiding the sharp shards of glass.
