CHAPTER FOURTEEN

──-ˋˏ☂︎ˎˊ-──

"HOW ARE you feeling?" A voice asked the moment Freya cracked her eyes open, immediately she was met with bright sunlight, and Diego's concerned expression from where he was sat, peering down at her.

"What happened?" She asked, glancing around the living room to discover that they were alone. Freya allowed him to pull her upwards into a sitting position.

"Luther knocked you out," he answered, his jaw clenching. "He knows you're way more powerful than him, and he couldn't allow you to let Vanya out. I tried to stop him, I really did, but he's just so...large compared to me. There was no point."

"Is Vanya still down there? Diego, we have to—"

She was interrupted by a violent shake of the house, and they shared a confused look. Glasses rocked on the table a few feet away, falling onto the floor, and breaking into a thousand pieces.

The house rattled once more, and Diego frantically looked around as the ceiling began to collapse from above them. Quickly, he lugged her out of the way, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her closely to his side. Freya watched with wide eyes as a piece of the ceiling fell onto the couch where she had just been laying moments before.

Breathing heavily, she glanced over to Diego who immediately dropped his hold on her. "Thanks."

"Let's go!" Luther's voice ordered from the foyer, and Freya noticed that he was helping Allison weakly limp down the stairs.

"No," Freya argued, glaring at him, before glancing back up the stairwell. "Not without Klaus."

Ignoring Diego's protests, Freya jogged up the stairs, her eyes darting around the hallway, before they landed on an unconscious boy on the ground. Her heart sputtered in her chest as she sprinted over to him. "Klaus! Klaus, get up!"

When he didn't respond, her panic grew, just as a strong force pulled her and Klaus out of the way.

She stared at Diego in shock, realizing he had refused to let her go up the stairs alone. Klaus grumbled something, and Diego lifted him up off the ground as the three of them hurriedly made their way out the back door. Her heart pounded as they stepped down the slippery fire escape steps, and only when they were within a safe distance from the crumbling building did she somewhat relax.

"Mom!" Diego suddenly yelled, and Freya glanced up to see Grace standing in the window, staring at them with a content smile on her face. "Mom, get out of there, now!" When she didn't move, Diego lunged. "I'm coming after you!"

"No, Diego!" Freya caught his arm, yanking him out of the way as the remaining of the building began to collapse. "You can't save everyone, and I'm sure as hell not about to let you walk in there and die. So I'm saving you."

He reluctantly allowed her to pull him away, and the three of them ducked behind a dumpster. Freya held her nose at the disgusting smell that emitted from it, squeezing her eyes shut as the ground quaked from beneath them. When she opened them again, the Hargreeves house was gone. Nothing but blocks of cement and debris laid in its wake.

Diego abruptly pushed himself up, making his way over to where the mansion had been. "Mom, mom! Klaus, Freya get over here. Help me look!"

"Diego..." Klaus trailed off, sharing a look with Freya, who was frowning. He took a hold of Diego, gently tugging him backwards. "She's gone, Diego. Stop."

"What do you wanna do?" Diego questioned, tears beginning to brim his eyes. "You wanna—wanna...walk away from this?"

"No," Klaus answered.
