CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

──-ˋˏ☂︎ˎˊ-──

"IS IT just me or..."  Freya trailed off, staring at the snow covered grass in front of her with wide eyes. "Is winter here a little early?"

Nobody replied, the realization of how deep the problem actually was started to settle in. Vanya put the car into park, and they all quickly climbed out of the vehicle, warily watching the farmhouse which had a bright blue light swirling above it—almost looking like a tornado tube.

A blonde girl who Freya could only assume was Sissy came running out, holding a gun out in front of her, and they all froze. "Sissy!" Vanya yelled. "Sissy, what's wrong?"

"Carl...he's dead. Harlan tossed him aside like a rag doll. Same way you sent those policemen flying."

"Well shit," Freya mumbled, rubbing her arms to keep warm as the wind started to pick up.

"What did you do to him?"

"I—"

"What the hell did you do to my son?" Sissy demanded.

"We don't have time for this," Five announced, and he went to take a step, pausing once she pointed a gun at him. He sighed in exasperation. "Freya?"

"On it," she replied immediately, holding her hand out, and within seconds the gun flew from Sissy's grasp to her own. "We're here to play hero and save your son. So if you don't mind..."

Reluctantly, Sissy's shoulders slumped in defeat and she stepped out of the way. They rushed onto the farm, and Freya had to take a step back to steady herself from strong gusts of wind inside. A sort of shield was formed around Harlan, and she watched in horror as he floated in the air, screaming and seizing. She dropped the gun onto the hay-covered ground in shock.

"Harlan!" Vanya yelled. "It's me. I know you're really scared. But I can help you! I need you to listen to me, okay? Can you do that?" Vanya's eyes turned a weird shade of blue, before she stepped into the energy shield that was separating them from the small boy.

"Guys!" Klaus called in a panicked tone, and Freya snapped her head over to look at him. "Who are they?"

"Oh, shit," Diego groaned, and Freya froze upon seeing Lila and the Handler standing out in the middle of the field. Immediately, her gut clenched at the sight.

"Diego's girlfriend and the Handler," Five answered Klaus, making Freya scowl.

"Ex-girlfriend," he quickly corrected, glancing guiltily back at Freya, who immediately felt her gaze narrow.

"I didn't know you'd even gotten exclusive."

"We didn't. We just, uh."

"You what?"

"You know what? Doesn't matter," Luther cut in. "They both look angry."

"Yeah," Allison agreed. "Diego has that effect on people."

"I'm gonna go find out what they want," Five declared. "You guys stay with Vanya and the kid."

"I'm coming with you, too," Diego told him firmly.

"Same," Freya announced. "I don't trust that little freak to keep her hands to herself."

Diego rolled his eyes as Five started to jog away. "Fine. Let's go."

"Hmm," the Handler mused when they were close enough for them to hear her. "I love that fresh country air. Don't you, darling?"
