"Why aren't you asking me anything about the rumors of the mystery boy"

Jemimah asked Smriti, her best friend as they stepped in the cafe.

Smriti chuckled and said while giving a teasing smile "Well your reaction when I told you about it that day, tells that there was nothing like it. Plus I know you have a crush on someone else"

Jemimah's face turned bright red as she  muttered, "No, you don't know cause I don't have one".

Smriti teased, "Oh please I know you like the Shafali's brother, Arjun Verma"

Jemimah's eyes widened, and she nearly choked on her drink. "What? Arjun? Shafali's brother? No way!" she sputtered, trying to sound casual but failing miserably.

Smriti grinned, leaning in closer. "Your face is turning the same shade as your bat handle grip! Admit it, Jemi."

Jemimah waved her hand dismissively, trying to hide her embarrassment. "Smriti, you have no idea what you're talking about. Arjun's just… a nice guy, that's all."

Smriti raised an eyebrow. "Oh, 'just a nice guy,' huh? Is that why you turned into a stuttering mess when he asked you about your favorite ice cream flavor at Shafali's party?"

Jemimah groaned, covering her face with her hands. "I was just surprised, okay? I wasn’t expecting him to care about my dessert preferences!"

Smriti laughed, nudging her. "Sure, and I suppose the way you 'accidentally' ended up sitting next to him all night was just a coincidence too?"

Jemimah peeked out from behind her hands, giving Smriti a half-hearted glare. "You’re the worst, you know that?"

Smriti winked. "I know, but I’m also right. So, when are you going to ask him out?"

Jemimah shook her head furiously. "Never! I can’t! Shafali would never let me live it down, and besides, what if he doesn’t even like me like that?"

Smriti patted her on the back, still grinning. "Relax, Jemi. If Arjun doesn’t already have a crush on you, he’s clearly missing out. But I’m pretty sure he’s noticed how ‘nice’ you are too."

Jemimah's cheeks flushed even more as she muttered under her breath, "Yeah, right... ‘just nice’ now can we drop this."

Smriti nodded as she laughed at the state of her best friend.

As they sipped their drinks, Smriti noticed the different jacket Jemimah was wearing. It wasn't hideous infact it was simple uet very stylish but it wasn't Jemimah’s style.

Smriti sipped her coffee, her eyes wandering over Jemimah’s jacket. “So, about that jacket—where did you get it? It’s not really your usual style, but it looks pretty good on you.”

Jemimah shifted in her seat, her cheeks flushing slightly as she replied, “Oh, this? I just picked it up recently. Thought I’d try something different.”

Smriti raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying Jemimah’s casual explanation. “Come on, Jemi. It’s not like you to change your wardrobe so suddenly. Is there a story behind it?”

Jemimah hesitated, her mind racing. She wanted to share the truth about the arrangement with Yashasvi, but the contract she signed had a strict confidentiality clause. She knew she couldn’t reveal any details.

She managed a weak smile and said, “Not really. Just experimenting with some new looks. You know how it is—sometimes you just feel like switching things up.”

Smriti looked at her skeptically but decided not to press further. “Alright, if you say so. But I swear, there’s something you’re not telling me.”

Jemimah chuckled, trying to deflect. “Maybe I’m just trying to keep things interesting. You should know me by now.”

Smriti laughed, shaking her head. “You’re incorrigible. But I get it. If there’s anything you want to share, you know I’m here.”

Jemimah appreciated Smriti’s understanding, though she felt a pang of guilt for not being able to explain. The contract was supposed to be a secret, and she was bound by it.

As they continued chatting and enjoying their coffee, Jemimah’s thoughts were a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. The secrecy and the need to keep up appearances weighed heavily on her, but she was determined to navigate this tricky situation without letting it affect her friendships—or her public image.
