Gwen stayed up until almost four in the morning getting her moonstone essay finished. She slept for about two hours, scribbled down some made up dreams for her dream diary, and ended up having to skip breakfast so that she could finish her drawing of a bowtruckle. She apologised to Neville when she saw him in the common room and explained she had been in detention; he told her Hermione helped him finish labelling it in the end and that it was alright. With several other essays hanging over her head, Gwen made it to Divination first thing, where she found an equally dishevelled Ron and Harry keeping her company.

'She can't make anything weird out of buying new shoes, can she?' Ron asked when Gwen sat down.

'It's Trelawney, of course she can,' Gwen mumbled, yawning widely. Her hair had gone grey from the lack of sleep, but she didn't bother changing it.

'How was detention last night?' Ron asked her and Harry.

  'Fine,' Gwen said.

'What did she make you do?'

  'Lines,' Harry yawned.

'That's not too bad, then, is it?' said Ron.

  'Nope,' said Harry.

Gwen didn't miss that Harry had also failed to mention the engraving in the backs of their hands. It was not something she wanted to discuss, and evidently he didn't either.

'Oh, I forgot,' Ron went on, 'did she let you off for Friday?'

Gwen shook her head. Ron groaned sympathetically.

It was not an easy day. Although Gwen had managed to get her Vanishing Spell right during lunch the day before, and therefore earned herself five points for Gryffindor, however she had to give up her lunch hour to start her homework for Professor Flitwick. She was ambushed once again by Angelina Johnson, who was channelling Oliver Wood's energy, and on learning that neither Gwen or Harry would be able to attend Friday's Keeper tryouts, told him she was not at all impressed by his attitude and that she expected players who wished to remain on the team to put training before their other commitments.

'It's detention!' Gwen shouted after her as she stalked away, attracting the attention of several students around.

'Honestly, does she think I'd rather be stuck in a room with that old toad, or playing Quidditch?' Gwen said angrily to Harry, Ron, and Hermione at dinner later that day.

'At least it's only lines,' said Hermione consolingly. 'It's not as if it's a dreadful punishment really...'

Gwen noticed Harry was actively avoiding her eye. Neither of them had yet told Ron and Hermione what had actually happened in Umbridge's office, and neither of them seemed to want to. Gwen had debated writing a letter to Remus when she'd got into bed, but she only thought that would exacerbate the situation. Plus, Remus already had too much to think about, given his job in the Order of the Phoenix. Gwen didn't want to give Umbridge the satisfaction of hearing she had complained, either; it was like a private battle of wills between Gwen and Harry, and that toad.
