The air in the sanctuary was thick with tension, an uneasy silence settling over the ancient trees that had stood guard over this hidden place for centuries. Eliana stood in the center of the gathering, her eyes locked on Dr. Rand, who was still surrounded by Enchanted hunters with their spears at the ready. The elders of the sanctuary, a council of wise and powerful beings, formed a loose circle around them, their expressions a mixture of suspicion, curiosity, and concern.
Eldric watched from the sidelines, his heart pounding in his chest. The memories he had sensed from Dr. Rand during the interrogation were still fresh in his mind—fragments of terror, desperation, and a looming sense of disaster. He knew the man was telling the truth, but convincing the others would not be easy.
Eliana stepped forward, her voice calm but firm. "You say the Mundane forces are ignoring the warning signs of a great catastrophe. Explain to us why we should believe you, Dr. Rand."
Dr. Rand, his clothes still disheveled and his face marked with exhaustion, looked around the circle, searching for any sign of empathy or understanding. He found little. Taking a deep breath, he began.
"They're blinded by their own ambition," he said, his voice cracking slightly. "The Mundane forces have been pushing the earth beyond its limits—extracting resources, drilling deep into the crust, and using technologies that disrupt the natural balance. They're so focused on winning this war and advancing their technology that they're ignoring the signs of the earth's instability."
One of the elders, a tall figure with a stern expression, crossed his arms. "And what makes you think we should care? The Mundanes have always been reckless, always seeking to dominate nature rather than live in harmony with it. Why should we believe you're any different?"
Dr. Rand's shoulders slumped, the weight of the accusations almost too much to bear. "Because I'm not like them," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "I've seen the data, the seismic readings, the shifts in the tectonic plates. The earth is on the brink of a catastrophic event, one that could destroy everything—Enchanted and Mundane alike. I tried to warn them, but they wouldn't listen. That's why I came here, why I risked everything to find you."
Eliana's gaze softened slightly as she glanced at Eldric. "What do you think?" she asked, her voice gentle.
Eldric hesitated, feeling the eyes of the council upon him. He closed his eyes, reaching out with his empathic abilities, trying to sense the truth behind Dr. Rand's words. As he did, he was overwhelmed by a wave of emotions—fear, guilt, desperation. And then, suddenly, a flash of memory. Eldric saw a lab, sterile and cold, filled with machines that hummed ominously. He felt the ground tremble beneath his feet, saw the look of horror on Dr. Rand's face as he realized the full extent of the danger.
Eldric gasped, opening his eyes. "He's telling the truth," he said, his voice trembling. "The danger is real, and it's coming faster than we think."
The elders exchanged glances, murmuring among themselves. Finally, one of them, an elderly woman with silver hair and piercing blue eyes, spoke up. "If what you say is true, Dr. Rand, then we must act. But we cannot act blindly. What do you propose we do?"
Dr. Rand looked relieved that someone was finally taking him seriously. "There's a point—an epicenter of sorts—where the instability is strongest. If we can reach it, we might be able to stabilize the tectonic plates, at least temporarily. But it won't be easy. The Mundane forces are likely monitoring the area, and they won't hesitate to stop us."
Eliana nodded, her mind already working through the logistics. "We'll need a small group, one that can move quickly and quietly. Eldric, Kara, Gareth, Dalton, and I will go. We'll need your knowledge, Dr. Rand, to guide us."
