OUTSIDE SOUTH SIDE HIGH, THE SERPENTS AND I WERE CHAINED TOGETHER AND TO THE FRONT SIGN.
Archie rode up on his bike. "Well, well, well. The cavalry's finally here," I said as he slid to a stop.

"Guess that means we've got Hiram's attention," Sweet Pea said as Archie dismounted.

"Are you out of your mind? Chaining yourself to this place? They're going to tear it down in two days, dude," Archie said.

I scoffed. "Not unless Hiram wants the blood of eight young Serpents on his hands. We're not going anywhere. Go tell your boss that."

In the morning, as I poured myself some hot water from the thermos Clary had brought, she asked, "God, why didn't you call me last night, Jug? I would have brought blankets for you and your crew."

"You would have tried to stay the night," I remarked with a half-smile.

"Are you sure you're not going to get arrested for trespassing or protesting without a permit?" Clary asked, rubbing my shoulder.

"Oh, that's the beauty of this," I said, meeting her gaze. "If Sheriff Keller and his goons try to manhandle a bunch of teens peacefully fighting to save their former school, it's going to look ugly—probably go viral, too, which, honestly, is the kind of publicity I'd welcome. And besides, no one's going to mess with those guys over there." I gestured toward my dad and a few of the older Serpents.

"Good point," Clary sighed. "I have some Student Council obligations with Veronica, but I'll be back later tonight, okay?" She rubbed my arm and kissed me lightly.

"Go get 'em, Tracy Flick," I said with a grin. She chuckled, kissed me once more, and then stood up, heading to her car.
