First days of school are stressful enough, but pair that with a sick grandma and a new country, it's like if stress threw twenty dodgeballs made of steel into your gut and then ripped them out. That's how I felt as I stood outside of a public school in the middle of Seoul, South Korea.
I looked around for anyone that looked like they remotely knew what they were doing, and that seemed to be everyone. It was kind of interesting watching how different the way these high school kids acted compared to how kids in America acted, and I kind of got distracted people watching honestly. But back to my plan. I looked down at my paper with my classroom on it, and went up to the first girl I saw that looked friendly. My korean was a little rusty, but I figure that nine out of ten people don't know english, so I've gotta work with it.
"Hello!" I start with a wave. The girl turns around with just as wide of a smile on her face.
"Hello! Are you the new girl?" She asks. I nod and point to my paper.
"My name is Hong Lindsay! And yours?" I ask with a smile.
"My name is Kim Chaelee. Lindsay is an American name right? Are you from there?" She asks.
I nod. "Yes I am! Oregon born and raised." I say. The girl looks confused.
"Oregon? Is that in the corner?" She asks.
"One state below it!" I say with a huge smile. She looks extremely happy after this and grabs the paper out of my hand.
"We have the same homeroom! You're my new friend." She says before linking arms with me and pulling me into a random hallway.

The classroom was quite larger than I expected it to be. Chaelee showed me the classroom briefly before taking me to the office. In there was multiple aids and secretaries. The principal was speaking to one of them when he saw Chaelee.
"Who's this Chaelee?" He asked. I waved and moved to the side of my new friend instead of standing behind her.
I bowed and then spoke. "My name is Hong Lindsay, and I'm the new student from America." I said. His mouth made an O shape before he went to his desk. He came back and looked at Chaelee.
"I've got it handled from here, get to class sweetie." He said with a wink.
"Bye bye dad see you for lunch." She said before she skipped off to homeroom.
"So America huh? How is it over there? I haven't been in years!" He says with a small chuckle.
"The same as always sir. So do you know where my class is?" I ask politely.
The older man nods, and begins to walk into the hall. I follow him, and soon enough we were standing in front of a crowded classroom with tons of kids bustling about. Through the window, Chaelee saw me and waved. She had a huge smile on her face, and the desk next to her was empty too! Score.
The principal walked in with me, and I bowed to show respect. "Hello class! This is your new student, please treat her with kindness!" He says. The class nods, and they all bow as he leaves. I stand now alone in the middle of the classroom, and feel everyone's eyes on me. The teacher walks next to me and stands.
"What was your name again?" She asks.
"My name is Hong Lindsay, and I'm honored to be a part of this class!" I say. The teacher smiles, and looks around the room to try and find me a seat.
"Sit next to Hwang Hyunjin in the back. He's a top student so he can help you catch up to our place." My smile instantly falters as I look to a sad Chaelee. She purses her lips. I do the same as I look to the only other empty seat in the classroom. The boy looks at me with bug eyes before looking out the window. I sigh, and walk over to my seat, pulling the chair out loudly and slumping into the seat with a thud. The teacher smiles and moves on to the lecture as if nothing happened. As if my world didn't just come crashing down because my only friend in this school was across the room and this guy was probably my bane of existence.
The class went pretty okay, besides only being able to understand what the teacher was saying 75 percent of the time. But it's not like I could ask the guy next to me for help, since he seemed to act as if I was invisible the only time I asked him for anything (a pencil). Once it was over though, I walked straight over to Chaelee.
"That guy is a jerk!" I say as we walk to our lockers. She shakes her head.
"Do not say that around anyone that isn't me or you will die." She says. I scoff.
"That's ridiculous. How is he that much of a god here if he doesn't even know how to give someone a pencil?" I ask harshly. "Like honestly you would think he would be a little nicer-"
"How come?" A man's voice asks from behind me. My eyes go wide as I look at Chaelee and she just instantly grabs my hand and yanks me to stand next to her. In front of us stands Hwang Hyunjin.
"How come what?" I ask snappily. He looks a little taken aback, before regaining his cool composure.
"How come I need to be a little nicer? Or give you a pencil? I don't know you." He states.
"Thank god." I say, before continuing. "As I was saying to Chaelee, the god complex when we've just met is insane! You should at least have some pity on someone that's moved to a foreign country and doesn't even have a pencil! God men here and there are all the same!" I ramble in my anger as I poke his chest. He takes it all before sighing.
"Are you done?" He asks.
My eyes widen again, as he just looks bored. "Yeah because I don't want to waste any more time of pathetic people like yourself." I say before I step back and let Chaelee take me to our class. This time I sit next to her though.
Men might not suck, but that one does.
The rest of the day goes somewhat smoothly, until lunch. I was quietly grabbing my lunch, as some do, before I hear a loud shout from across the cafeteria. "Yah! Hong Lindsay!" I turn around as a 5'1 girl with two others behind her come running up. They grab me and take me away from the lunch line, away from my food. They drag me into the bathroom and toss me to the floor. The main girl laughs at me, and then speaks. "Don't you dare make any moves on Hyunjin oppa or I'll kill you. You may sit next to him but that doesn't mean he's yours." She states. The other two nod. I roll my eyes.
"Have him. I don't want him. Not now, not ever. He's a douche." I state before standing. "I didn't get the choice with my seat." I say before walking out. I hear complaints coming from the girls as I walk back into the cafeteria and see dozens of eyes on me. I just look at the ground and grab my food. I find Chaelee sitting with two other girls and when I sit down I finally look up again. No one is staring anymore, besides one table. They all continue to look before I just decide to ignore them. But as I was eating all I could imagine was Hyunjin bug eyes as him and his friends stared at my back.
