Chapter 1:
Artemis settled into Damon's car and was greeted by two shocked faces. "Artemis, what are you doing here?" Elena looked at her with wide eyes. "You shouldn't be here."
"Hello to you too, big sister," Artemis retorted, slamming the car door behind her. She fastened her seatbelt. "I have every right to be here. Besides, I won't let my sister die alone with her on-off boyfriend." Artemis gave a fake smile to the dark-haired vampire in question, who merely rolled his eyes.
"No, I won't let you die because of me. Artemis, I'm the older one, and I'm telling you to get out of this car. Now." Elena leaned back, attempting to unfasten Artemis's seatbelt, but the younger Gilbert pushed her sister back into her own seat.
"As soon as we cross this border, you'll feel everything again. You'll become human once more. You'll experience your own death again," Damon interjected. Artemis scoffed. "I know what I'm getting into. I'll die again."
Elena stared at her incredulously. "Yes, Artemis, you'll die again! You say it as if it's no big deal. I won't allow you to–"
Artemis crossed her arms and sighed. "Elena, I'm supposed to accept your decision and let you die. Fine. Now respect my decision and let me ride with you." Elena tried to respond, opening her mouth, but nothing came out, and she closed it again. Satisfied, Artemis leaned back in her seat and looked expectantly at Damon. "We don't have much time. Drive."
Damon started the car, smiled at Elena, and drove across the border. They hadn't gone far when Artemis felt blood flowing from her chest. "Damn it."
Elena turned to Damon, panic evident in her eyes. "Hurry. We have to die while we're still vampires–" Suddenly, Elena began coughing up water. Artemis still felt her blood pouring out. She unbuckled herself and placed her hand on her chest, trying to prevent excessive blood loss.
"No..."
Damon pressed the gas pedal, accelerating the car's speed. Artemis recognized the familiar surroundings of Mystic Falls. "Hurry, Damon." The girl started coughing up blood.
"No. Come on."
"Damon," Elena said.
"I know. I know." Damon looked at Elena with complete affection.
The couple held hands and cherished their remaining time together. Artemis could already see the Mystic Grill. She closed her eyes, preparing to die. The car raced toward the Mystic Grill at full speed, crashing through the wall. Immediately, a massiv explosion erupted.
