Mom is watching tv in the sitting area and my half eaten birthday cake is on the dining table when I come downstairs the next morning after a hot shower. As usual she doesn't say much of anything as I'm making myself a bowl of cereal in the kitchen.

While I'm eating my breakfast alone at the island my phone chimes on the counter, alerting me about text messages from my best friend. I unlock the screen cheesy really hard, reading the silly stuff she sent me. I love Sydney to death but she's such a weirdo sometimes.

"Angel." My mother's slim figure right across the island startles me. The look she's given me lets me know there's something very serious she has to tell me so I put my phone down and pay attention.

"Hi, mom. When did you get home?" I greet her, shoving a spoonful of Honey Nut Cheerios in my mouth.

She says with a straight face while pouring herself a hot cup of coffee. "Around three in the morning."

"How was your flight?" I keep the conversation going knowing she doesn't look like she's in the mood to talk to me. Her attitude has always been like this towards me but there was sometimes when she was happy to see me. I guess today isn't one of those days. Her mood swings give me whiplash. Never know what I'm going to get today or tomorrow.

"Long," she rests her backside against the counter, holding the cup with both hands, slowly sipping the coffee as steam rises from the hot liquid. She didn't put any milk,  sugar or cream so I bet it's nasty but that's how she likes it. Bitter. Dressed in her casual clothes which is a plain shirt, long pattern skirt and slippers on her feet she clears her throat and stares me down. "Me and your father, both are aware that you're an adult now." She starts talking but I already know what's next since the same exact thing happened to my older sister when she turned eighteen.

Mom and dad kicked her out. Luckily, she had a boyfriend because she wouldn't have anywhere to live. As for me, well I'm not so lucky because I have no boyfriend or any money. Looks like I will be either on the streets or the women's shelter until I find another job. I was fired recently from my current one.

"Please just give me a few more months, mom." I beg, dropping my spoon inside the bowl of cold milk. I'm on the verge of tears. I didn't expect to wake up to this early in the morning. She gave my sister thirty days before kicking her out. Hopefully she gives me more time as well.

"I would but your father and I had sold the house and we're moving by the end of the month so it's best if you find somewhere to go very soon." She says emotionlessly.

"The end of the month? Mom that's two weeks away." I scoff, with a tear down my cheek. That's not enough time for me. Why didn't they tell me they sold the house? "Why are you guys selling the house? You two never spoken to me about it."

My mother sighs deeply, setting the cup down on the counter. "Truth is we're getting a divorce. We were gonna discuss everything after moving but looks like that won't be an option now. If you want you could live with him in New Mexico but you can't come with me I'm afraid."
