"I need to see her, let me in," Desmond's voice boomed outside of the door.
The day had finally come, it was Desmond and Adriana's wedding day. All the hard work, preparing and planning, had finally come to an end. The wedding was destination, the place they first said I love you to one another and the place they revealed just how much they meant to one another. Azores, Portugal.
Not only did Adriana have family here, but it was also a place she had traveled often with her mother. She loved Portugal, she had spent many summers of her childhood there. But there was always something special every time she had visited the Azores. It made perfect sense to have it there.
Yet now, as she sat on the chair of the vanity close next to the window, looking out at the mountains of Green she couldn't help but sob. One of the best days of her life, the moment she's been dreaming about for the years of being with Desmond is here. But her mom wasn't.
These thoughts had come to mind as she had just finished her hair and make up was about to be applied. She had watched Emily with her young daughter in the room getting ready together. She had watched Esme and Emine's interactions fixing last minute dress issues, while the other two bridesmaids sat on the bed. And that's when the tears fell.
The women were confused, why she was crying. Such a heavy sob on such a beautiful day. Emine tried to console the woman, trying to figure out why she was so upset, but Adriana couldn't bring it to words.
Emine had everyone leave the room to try and figure out what was going on with Adriana. She saw the woman's hand was clutching something, slowly unraveling her fingers to see just what it was. It was a dainty Portuguese gold necklace.
Emine had seen that Necklace in a picture before, it belonged to Adriana's mother.
She now understood why the woman was so upset on her wedding day and felt it was best to give her some space. Adriana was glad that her mother-in-law was trying to console her but she just couldn't shake that feeling.
As the woman waited in the halls, Leo, Desmond's best man ruffled his eyebrow in confusion.
"Is everything all right?" He asked.
Emine knew that they were on a tighter schedule for the ceremony. Emine knew they would soon have to begin the walk so she had to call her son. She assured Leo that everything was all right but asked if he could bring Desmond as soon as possible.
Not even five minutes later, Desmond is pacing down the hall.
"I need to see her, let me in."
Emine, although understanding Adriana would only be able to seek comfort from him at the moment, was a stickler for tradition. Grabbing onto a black silk scarf she had held in her hand, she wrapped it around the back of his head, shielding his eyes, so that he may not see his soon to be wife.
She opens the door slowly, letting Adriana know Desmond would be coming in.
Stopping into the room, the floorboard creaks a bit at the movement. Adriana's cries have slowed now, her breathing was shaking but tears still streamed down her face.
"Adriana..." Desmond whispered, "Talk to me, please."
He tried to move closer to where he assumed she would be, listening to the sounds of her breath hitching. Reaching out his hand, hoping she would take it. Then he felt it, the smoothness of her hands clasping him harshly.
He brought her hand to his mouth, kissing it softly letting her let it all out.
"I'm sitting in the room getting ready for what is to be our big day when I just look around. Everyone's mother was helping them prepare... Emily helping her daughter decide which florals to place in her hair. Emine fixing Esme's dress to fit her better. My mother should've been here as well."
