<May, 2015 - Los Angeles>
Kaworu rested his chin on his hand. "Shinji," he said. "Do you love me?"
Shinji smiled. "Of course I do," he answered. "You're my best friend!"
Kaworu sighed. "Right..."
"You okay?" Shinji asked.
"I'm just sort of sad about the move..."
"Me too, but we can still talk on the phone and text and stuff!"
Kaworu looked at Shinji, who had a big grin on his face, and couldn't help but smile, too. "I guess..." he said, eyes drifting back to the ground.
He fiddled with his necklace. It had a cross pendant on it, which had become discolored over the years from him mindlessly rubbing it with his fingers or twirling the chain back and forth while holding it. He thought he should probably get a new one.
"We can still see each other sometimes," Shinji said. "I'm sure my father will let me visit you on weekends or holidays."
"That would be nice..."
Shinji could tell that Kaworu was upset. He was pretty easy to read.
"I'm sorry..." Shinji said.
Kaworu looked at him. "Why?" he asked.
"Because if we weren't friends then it wouldn't be hard to leave. It's my fault you're sad, isn't it..." he wasn't smiling anymore. "I'm sorry."
"Hey!" Kaworu said, grabbing Shinji's shoulder. "Do you even hear yourself? It's not your fault I'm leaving, so it's not your fault I'm sad. I'm sad because I won't get to wake up every morning and look forward to seeing you at school."
"Okay..." Shinji mumbled.
"Okay, good."
Shinji's phone beeped as an alarm he'd set went off. "I have to catch the bus," he said. "Are you coming over on Saturday?"
"Of course," Kaworu said. "It's my last chance to see you."
Shinji smiled weakly. "Okay, well bye..."
"Bye..."
Shinji turned and started to walk towards the street. Kaworu's smile faded as he watched his friend go.
'Fuck.'
~~~
Kaworu knocked on the door and was greeted by a a smiling Shinji not too long afterwards. "You're here already!" he said happily. "Come in, come in!"
Kaworu stepped inside and Shinji directed him towards the couch. "Stay here," Shinji said, running upstairs to his room. When he came back down, he was holding a small box. He handed it to Kaworu.
"What's this?" Kaworu asked, starting to open it.
"It's a farewell gift."
"I-" It was a sterling silver necklace with a cross pendant.
"You're always fiddling with your older one," Shinji said. "So much it changed color."
"How... How much did this cost?"
"Why does it matter?"
Kaworu went quiet.
"You don't have to wear it if you don't want to," Shinji said. "I know that other one means a lot to you, I just wanted to make sure that if the chain snaps or something then-"
"It's not that," Kaworu interrupted. "I just didn't think you had noticed."
Shinji smiled. "Of course I noticed! We see each other nearly every day."
Kaworu started to take off his old necklace and opened up the hatch on the new one.
"Wait, Kaworu, you don't have to change it now,"
"But you're right," Kaworu said. "It's old and the chain is about snap. I was going to get a new one once we moved anyways."
He finished putting the new necklace on and turned to look at Shinji with a smile. "Thank you."
"I'm happy you like it."
~~~
Even though it was their last day together, Shinji and Kaworu didn't do anything out of the ordinary except for giving the farewell gift. Time flew by, and at 6:00 Kaworu's mother had called and was on her way to pick him up.
"Six more months and I'll be able to drive out here and see you myself..." Kaworu said.
"You could drive here easily."
"Yes, but not legally."
Shinji laughed, making Kaworu smile. 'I've got to do it now.'
"Hey Shinji?"
"Yeah?"
"I have to tell you something before I leave..."
"Oh, oka-"
"SHINJI!" his father's voice boomed from upstairs.
"Coming, Father!" Shinji answered. "I'll be right back."
Kaworu sat by himself for a few minutes and heard yelling upstairs. 'Shinji will be in a bad mood after this...' he thought. '... Maybe I shouldn't tell him...'
Shinji came downstairs a little riled up, but in the process of calming down. "Sorry.." He said with a sigh. "What did you want to tell me?"
"It-" 'It's now or never.' "It was nothing, don't worry about it."
"Are you sure?"
Kaworu nodded. Just then, a knock was heard on the door. Shinji went to answer it, but Kaworu stayed sitting. He might not be back here for so long. The place that he had come to every few days wasn't going to be accessible for weeks or maybe even months at a time. He was going to miss it. He already missed it. He already missed Shinji.
Kaworu felt a stabbing pain as he thought about leaving. Shinji had always called them "best friends" but in reality, they only had each other. They were best friends, worst friends, and everything in between. He was going to leave Shinji here, alone.
"Kaworu." Shinji's voice startled him. "You're mom's waiting outside in her car."
"Oh..."
Kaworu got up and walked with Shinji towards the door. When they reached it, the smaller boy held out his arms for a hug. Kaworu grabbed him and squeezed tight.
"I'm really going to miss you..." he said quietly.
"I'm going to miss you, too."
They said their goodbyes and waved to each other when Kaworu was in the car. He saw Shinji trying to say something and rolled down the window.
"What?" he asked loudly.
"Don't forget to keep in touch!"
Kaworu grinned. "I won't."
As soon as Kaworu was off his street and out of sight, the smile left Shinji's face. "I guess that's it then..." he said, going back inside.
He could feel the tears welling up. He hadn't wanted to cry in front of Kaworu the last time they met before he moved, but he knew he couldn't hold it in for very long. He was known for being a bit of a crybaby after all...
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Woo! First chapter is out! :) I'm not actually sure when I'm releasing it but today (the day I'm typing this) is July 13th. I'm soooo happy that I get to write this. It won't be as long as my other story, Pumpkin Lattes, but that's mostly because the way the timelines work will be very different.
