Kaworu woke up at 5:30 a.m. even though he hasn't set an alarm. His mind was used to being up early every day, and he couldn't stop himself from opening his eyes like he usually did. And also like he usually did, he stretched out his arms to try and find Shinji on the other side of the bed, but was surprised to find no one there. He got up and walked into the den to find the boy working on his homework.
"Why are you up so early?" he asked, startling Shinji.
"You scared me..." Shinji said. "I'm just finishing up..."
Kaworu sat down next to him and watched him work.
"I'll never get anything done if you keeping looking at my answers..." Shinji said.
"Sorry, Love," Kaworu apologized before getting up. He walked to the kitchen. "Are you hungry?" he asked.
"I'm fine."
Kaworu started to take out a pot.
"Are you cooking spaghetti again?" Shinji asked.
"It's all I know how to make, you know that."
"I thought I taught you how to cook eggs."
"I keep burning them, though."
Shinji smiled. "Well, as long as you like spaghetti I don't see a problem."
Kaworu opened the cupboard. "Crap. We're out of it."
"Spaghetti?"
"Yeah."
"Shinji started to get up. "I'll make you something, then."
"No it's fine..." Kaworu said. "I'll just try making eggs again."
Kaworu looked in the fridge, which now has about 15 magnets on it, and found the egg carton. Five minutes passed and a bad smell started to spread through the apartment. "Love?" he said.
"Hm?"
"I burned them again."
"You should try making toast."
Another few minutes passed.
"I burned the toast." Kaworu announced.
"I'm starting to question whether you're an engineer or not if you can't figure out how to use a fucking toaster," Shinji got up. "I'll just make something really quickly..."
He made a plain omelette because they didn't have anything to put in it except more eggs. They'd bought about three dozen eggs because they were on sale, and even though the they didn't really have to save money anymore, how could Kaworu (who loved omelettes) resist thirty six eggs for eight dollars?
"Thank you, Love." Kaworu said when Shinji was done. "I'm sure it'll be great like always."
"You say that every time..." Shinji yawned.
"And I'm always right."
Shinji smiled and went back to work with Kaworu sitting across the table from him, eating. They didn't talk, mostly because Kaworu didn't want to disturb him, but it was nice.
"I think you should get some more rest." Kaworu finally said.
"I'm fine..." Shinji insisted.
"But you have bags under you're eyes."
"I'm... fine..."
"That's basically code for 'I'm not fine'."
Kaworu got up and walked to the other side of the table, picking Shinji up from his chair.
