Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young Koopa King lived in a grand castle. Although the King was very powerful and had any material thing his heart desired, he was a cruel and selfish ruler. Until, on one cloudy night, a benign beggar-woman approached the King bearing a humble gift: a single fire flower. The King scoffed at the pitiful gift and turned the beggar away. The beggar warned the King that his cruelty would lead him to be alone and unloved, but he dismissed her again and threatened to punish her for her outburst. Suddenly, however, the beggar revealed herself to be none other than the guardian of the stars, Princess Rosalina! The King begged for her forgiveness, but it was too late. Rosalina used her powerful magic to place a spell on the King and his house, forever imprisoning them within the castle grounds and wiping their existence from the minds of all the realms. She told the King that her spell would remain in place until he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return. But as the years passed with many unsuccessful attempts to break the spell, the King fell into despair and lost all hope. For who could love a monster such as him?
