Lucy Chen got out of bed and headed to the bathroom. She does her morning routine, starting the kettle. Once the water boils, Lucy poured it into a mug with a ginger tea bag. As the tea steeps, she sat down at the island to enjoy her tea. She got out her phone and called Tim Bradford. He picked it up on the first ring.
"Go for Bradford." He said.
"Hey, it's Lucy. I was wondering if you would like to meet for dinner at our usual spot after my doctor's appointment."
"Why?"
"I have something to tell you."
"Okay then."
"How does seven sound?"
"That's perfect." He said as a call came in from over the radio.
"He wey, I got to go." He said.
"Okay, see you later." She said as she finished her tea, she gets up to get ready to leave for her appointment. She slipped on her shoes, grabbed her purse and keys and headed out. Lucy made it to the doctor's office with plenty of time before her appointment. She checks in with the receptionist and sits in the waiting room.
A nurse walked out the door.
"Lucy?" The nurse called out and Lucy slipped her phone into her pocket before following the nurse to a patient room. The nurse helps Lucy up into the chair before taking her vitals.
"Hello, Miss. Chen, my name is Nurse Evans. I will be doing your checkup today. Dr. Hill will be in once I'm done." She said. Lucy nodded in acknowledgment.
"Is anyone else joining us today before we get started?" She asked as Lucy shook her head.
"No, just me today." Lucy said.
"Let's get started so you can surprise him." Evans said, Lucy nodded. Nurse Evans and Lucy hear a loud commotion coming from outside the room. They exchange a look as Evans moves to open the door. Before she can open it, the door swings open, and a frazzled woman runs in. She bends over slightly to catch her breath as Lucy and Evans stare at her.
"Dr. Hill? Is everything okay?" Evans asked.
"No, it's not." Dr. Hill pants out.
"There is a crazed gunman out in the lobby taking people hostage because his baby mama didn't let him in her appointment." She said as she looked at her.
"You've got to be kidding me." Lucy grumbles as she hops off the table and reaches for her purse.
"Why does this always have to happen on my day off?" Dr. Hill and Evans look at Lucy confused.
"I'm a cop with the LAPD."
"Oh thank god!" Dr. Hill responds.
"Help us."
Lucy nodded and opened the door. She saw the man standing in the center of the lobby, pointing his gun at the receptionist. She doesn't make her presence known as she watched the scene in front of her.
"Tell me the room she's in and no one will get hurt." The gunman shouts.
"I can't... I can't do that." The receptionist says shakily. The gunman moved closer to the receptionist, the gun still trained on her.
"Tell me!" He yelled at her. She grabbed her phone out of her purse and quickly dialed 911.
"911 what is the address of your emergency?"
"Dispatch, this is off-duty officer, Lucy Chen badge #28537. I need assistance for a hostage situation at 1245 Wilshire Boulevard, code 3."
"Copy that. Sending all available units and mobilizing Metro."
"Got it."
"Stay safe. Patrol officers are arriving at the scene now. The Metro isn't far behind."Lucy acknowledged the dispatcher before hanging up. She grabbed her gun from her purse as the nurse and Dr. Hill huddled in the corner farthest from the door.
"What are you going to do?" Evans asked her.
"What type of gun did he have?"
"I'm not sure, maybe a pistol? It was small and he was holding it in one hand." Dr. Hill said as she looked at Lucy.
"Okay, you two stay in here and do not open the door until me or another officer says it's all clear." Lucy said as she moved to open the door.
"Wait, what are you going to do?" Dr. Hill asked her.
"Disarm and restrain him until my officers are able to breach." Lucy said as she quietly twists the door handle. With that, she quietly makes her way out of the room and towards the lobby. Lucy carefully made her way to the lobby.
"LAPD, drop the gun and put your hands on your head. Interlace your fingers." She yelled. He dropped the gun and put his hands on his head. Lucy holstered her gun, grabbed the gun and emptied it before she arrested him. Then the main doors fly open as Metro breaches.
"LAPD! Everyone put their hands up!" Metro shouts as they enter. Everyone complied except Lucy, who is still restraining the man.
"About damn time." Lucy grumbled.
"I'm code 4. The suspect is now unarmed and down." She yelled.
"Read him his rights." She said as she handed him off to another officer. He cuffed him and took him away. Tim arrived on the scene and pushed his way through the scene with Angela and Grey at his heels. Grey quickly ensured his officers had the situation under control. Tim walked in front of Lucy, keeping her at arm's length and looked at her.
"Hey are you okay?" Tim asked her.
"Yeah, I'm fine. So much for having the day off." She said jokingly.
"Hey, Lucy." Angela said softly.
"Hey Angela." She said softly.
"What happened?" Angela asked as they sat down in the waiting room.
"Well, I was in the middle of my doctor's appointment when I heard a loud commotion. Then Dr. Hill came in and informed me of the situation. The suspect was in the waiting room terrorizing the other people here. He was trying to get information about a patient. I assessed the situation and called for backup. Then I grabbed my gun and engaged the suspect. I ordered him to put the gun down and he followed my instructions and I detained him until you guys arrived." She said softly as she looked at them.
"Great. Thanks for staying. Now, go to your date with Tim." Angela said.
"You're welcome." She said as she went over to Tim.
"Hey, I'm free to go." She said looking at him.
"Great. Let's go then." Tim said.
