I was nestled in a dimly lit corner of my small cottage, surrounded by the dusty tomes and flickering candles around me. This was my hidden place. My brother, Thane's, books were scattered in front me, filled with secrets and mysteries beyond my understanding.
My brother has always been a great companion for me since we were kids. He was the one and the only friend of mine. His departure for the Selection Camp at Kyrencia, located in southeastern part of Wysteria's Plains, had left a gaping hole in my life, and now I love clinging to his belongings like a lifeline as I used to clung to him back then. These books with dark brown covers and an orange welcoming flames at the centre gives me warmth of him. These maps involving the whole area of Aethereia kingdom provide me the sense of his experience, when he used to talk about his combined practices he had participated in with other wielders of different elemental energies.
Out of all his things gathered in this small room, this book with yellow pages, that authenticate it as centuries old got my attention like anything. The book named 'The Flame's Prophecy' written by Arinthal, the wise, stood differently for me. I was tracing the lines with my index finger and my expressions were changing with the lines, as they were settling in my head.
I dived deeper into the pages, and my eyes were widened with wonder. The writings spoke about the mystic Wysteria's ancient magic, of the Supreme Fire Affinity that only a selected few could wield.
They said that after turning twenty, the flame within would manifest, revealing one's true potential. I felt a shiver running down my spine; my own twentieth name-day was mere months away. But I had already been able to bring small flames on my finger tips since the time I can remember. So what was I..... an exception?.......huh no, I must be something bad something unacceptable. I can feel it. I can feel it, everytime, when my mom ask me to stay away from people of Wysteria. I can feel it, as we were here in the border of Eldorador and I'm not allowed to be in the main city.
The texts also described about three tiers of power: Weak, Mild, and Strong. Those with Weak affinity could barely conjure a spark, while the Mild could summon small flames. Just like me but for that too, they have to attain an age of 20, But the Strong... they could unleash infernos. I wondered which category I would fall into if I turn 20. May be I'll be the Mild. like Thane. Maybe it's in our blood. After all our father was one of the Supreme. But he was the last as well.
With turning of each pages, my determination was growing. I wanted to uncover the secrets hidden within these ancient texts, I was strangely drawn to all this even when I haven't seen anything on my own. I have just heard about it from Thane.
I moved to the next page and the very first line explains what we wysterian are bond to do.
"The people of Wysteria shall submit to the Flame, their heart bound by ancient oaths"
This line hold me still for a second , speaking of the people of Wysteria's submission to the Flame. It was said that we were born to serve the fire, to harness its power and bend it to our will. Our ancestors had made a pact with the elemental forces, trading loyalty for protection and strength.
I moved my eyes lazily to the next page skipping a lot of explanation or many facts behind as one of the line was written in bold underlined style.
"Beware the Shadow's whisper, for it shall corrupt the strongest of wills. And when the flames dances with darkness, the very fabric of reality shall unravel."
Another passage spoke of a darker force: Shadow Power. It was said that a few individuals from Wysteria, blessed with stronger abilities, would succumb to the allure of shadow, aiding the villainous forces that sought to destroy our world. A jolt of shiver ran down the spine as I realized that my own father, before his passing, had hinted at such darkness.
A jolt of fear or may be something else settle through my body to my soul. What did it mean for the flames to dance with darkness? Was it a sign of the end times, or a warning of a great battle to come? Or may be I was one of the shadows mention earlier?
Was Lyra really a shadow? Is she the demon the book speaks about? Why was she hidden from the world?
