Elina Roshan stood at the edge of her
small apartment in London, staring out
the window at the city that had been her
home for the past eight years. The
skyline, with its mix of ancient and
modern architecture, seemed to stretch
endlessly into the cloudy sky. For many,
London was a city of opportunity, a place
where dreams could come true. But for
Elina, it was a place of solitude.
At 26, she had achieved much. A degree
in computer security from one of the
best universities in England and a job
she had been working for two years at a
top firm. *I've accomplished everything I
set out to do,* she thought, but the
hollow feeling inside her persisted. She
had a successful career, financial
stability, and the independence she had
always craved, but none of it filled the
void.
Elina's journey had begun when she was
just 18, leaving her home in Iran to study
in England. It had been a bold decision,
driven by her desire for freedom, both
academically and personally. *I needed
to get out, to be somewhere I could truly
be myself,* she remembered. In Iran, she
had always felt like an outsider, unable
to express her true self. Being a lesbian
in a country where her sexuality was not
just frowned upon but illegal had been
suffocating. *I couldn't live in fear
anymore, hiding who I am from
everyone around me.*
In England, she had found the freedom
to live her life authentically, but the cost
had been high. She was alone, cut off
from her family, who couldn't
understand her decision to leave, let
alone the reason why. Elina had no close
friends here; she found it hard to
connect with people beyond a surface
level. *It's easier to keep everyone at a
distance,* she would tell herself, but
deep down, she knew it was a defense
mechanism.
Her life had become a series of routines
-work, home, work again-punctuated
by the occasional venture out to a café or
a bookstore, but never with company.
Despite the bustling life around her,
Elina felt like she was living in a bubble,
isolated from the world. *I have
everything I wanted, but why am I still so
empty?* she wondered as she stared at
the people walking below, each one with
their own lives, their own connections.
London had given her the freedom to be
herself, but it hadn't given her the one
thing she craved most: companionship.
Elina had hoped that by coming here, she
would find a place where she belonged,
but the loneliness that had followed her
from Iran still lingered, refusing to let go.
She longed for someone who could
understand her, someone she could
share her life with, but that person
remained elusive.
As she turned away from the window,
the weight of her solitude pressed down
on her, heavy and unyielding. *Maybe
one day, things will be different,* she
thought, but even as she tried to
convince herself, the sadness lingered, a
constant reminder of what was missing
from her life.
