Once they got there, they were smuggled, They eventually made it to 'Big Ben', Hardy looked over to Manu, who was too busy, admiring the tower, Hardy reached in his pocket and grabbed a ring, it was silver, it had a stone in the middle, with a picture of 'Big Ben', The ring was slightly rusty, but that's all he could afford. He bent down behind her, but soon before he could say anything..
"BHAJI!" Buggu called out, "Balli is famous! They've made him a statue!"
They all turned to look, and it was a statue, that looked like Balli..?
They later found out that he was the statue, He was working as a living statue, Turns out.. He wasn't successful, he was poor and living in an house with other illegal immigrants, where they'd also be staying..
To make do, they cleaned stores and toilets, and sold 'adult' films
They had to sleep in a graveyard one night, as police were investigating the house they were currently living in
"Come on Manu, lets go" Hardy said
Manu looked up, "Okay, go where?"
"Back to India" Hardy responded
"Kya? What do you mean, 'Back to India'?" Manu asked
Hardy looked at her, "This isn't the place we imagined. If you're sick, you can't see a doctor, If harassed, you can't go to the cops. No bank account, no driving license, Because we have no ID. We don't exist for them! we'll always be illegal on this land."
Manu frowned, "Why? Did they produce this land in a factory? It's God's land. As much ours as theirs, They made borders, our land, your land, we're here because they were there! looting our country for centuries! Why else would we come here?"
She sighed and walked over to Hardy, and put her hand on his shoulder "We risked our life to get here... We cant go back. Now this is our city."
Hardy looked at her, "In our city, we wouldn't have to sleep in a graveyard! Many homes would open their doors to us and welcome us in! Why suffer humiliations?"
He then sat down on a bench, "Give me one reason to stay back, Manu. One reason." He said
Manu looked down, "I'll give you a reason.." and walked over and sat next to him, "Stay back for me.. Banda tu mera, I want to spend my life with you" She said, Hardy's eyes softened, and she leaned her head on his shoulder
After that, Hardy never spoke about going back to India.. He instead, looked for ways to become legal, He soon found a lawyer, 'Puru Patel'
"3 ways to citizenship, Buy, Beg or Marry. Buy, invest in a million pounds, and you'll get residency" Patel said
Manu scoffed, "If we had the money, why would we dunki? second option."
Puru continued, "Beg, Beg for Asylum"
Buggu looked at him, "what's Asylum?"
Patel looked at him, "Refuge, England will grant you refuge"
Emaan narrowed her eyes, "Refuge? Refuge from whom?"
Patel smirked, "from India, We'll claim that you were activists in India, at a protest, your country burned Sukhi alive, Say you'd be killed aswell, England can't deny asylum"
Hardy looked down, "Third solution..?"
Patel looked at him, "whats wrong with the second?"
Hardy looked up, "My country didn't kill Sukhi. Why lie?"
Patel scoffed, "It's not like you're statement will be on TV, it'll be kept in a file, who cares?"
"Im a soldier." Hardy said, "I care."
Patel continued, "Alright, the third and last solution is Marry. Marry a British Passport holder, divorce after 2 years.
Balli rolled his eyes, "if the bride's a no-show? Catherine didn't show up-"
Buggu interrupted him, "Balli, Balli, stop, enough, let it go"
Patel, "well, we can arrange for Manu first."
Manu and Hardy looked at eachother, "No." Manu simply stated, "next solution?"
"Manu, once. you you're legal, marry the man you love, Forget it, you won't have to live with the person you married" Patel said
Manu looked at Hardy again, then looked at the ground
