"But Dad, why the sudden change?" I asked, chewing on my food.
"You know, Lala, we only want what's best for you. It's time to let go of the past. Life has so much to offer, and I want you to embrace it fully. There are countless beautiful surprises waiting just around the corner for you. I want you to soar high, filled with vibrant colors," Dad replied, his voice steady and resolute, as if he were imparting wisdom that had been passed down through generations.
I nodded, pushing my food around on the plate, more engaged in the vegetables than the meal itself. The broccoli and carrots seemed to take on a life of their own, swirling in a dance of indecision as I contemplated my father's words.
Once Dad made a decision, I understood that it was set in stone. His stern demeanor often masked the tenderness of a father who would do anything to protect his children, but in this moment, I felt a chasm between his intentions and my own desires.
Lost in my musings, I was jolted back to reality by the overly sweet words of my stepmother slicing through the air like a knife.
"Honey, is it really necessary to send her away like this? We know her situation; how will she cope?" she implored Dad, her eyes betraying a mix of concern and something else entirely-perhaps jealousy or resentment.
"I'm fully aware of the implications, Kate. This decision wasn't made lightly, and she won't be alone. She has family there. I spoke with Dad, and he's thrilled about it. Plus, Jimin will be around to help her if any issues arise," Dad replied, unwavering, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"But darling, you must understand, Jimin is often preoccupied with his own career. He's a well-known idol; he can't be there for her all the time. How can you just declare her the CEO of the South Korean branch without any warning? Her health is a concern," Mom argued, throwing every possible reason at him to halt my departure.
Ah, so it's about me being a CEO and not my health. What does she mean by saying I'm not normal? Do I appear to be some kind of deranged lunatic? The thought stung, and I felt a wave of indignation wash over me.
I realized then that her sudden concern was nothing but a facade, a stark contrast to the disdain she had shown me throughout my life for possessing what she believed was rightfully hers.
The title of CEO, the responsibilities that came with it, and the life I was about to embark on were all such a new thing for me.
We found ourselves gathered around the dining table in our family estate, a scene bustling with maids and butlers diligently attending to their duties.
The lavish dishes laid out before us resembled a haphazard collection of boiled remnants rather than a sumptuous feast. The table, adorned with fine china and crystal glassware, felt more like a stage for a performance than a place for family bonding.
Each dish, meticulously prepared yet lacking in vibrancy, mirrored the tension that hung in the air, a stark reminder of the discord simmering beneath the surface.
