Kageko Yamikaze made her way to the training grounds, the sun just starting to dip below the horizon. Shadows stretched long across the field, perfect for practicing her Quirk. She didn't mind being alone here, especially since Shinso would soon join her.
The training grounds were quiet, with only the soft rustling of leaves and her steady breathing breaking the silence. Shinso was already there, calm as ever, waiting for her. His presence always brought a sense of focus, and tonight was no different.
"Ready for this?" Kageko asked with a small smirk, taking her position opposite him. The shadows around her feet seemed to shift in anticipation.
Shinso nodded, eyes narrowing as he concentrated. "Always," he replied, his voice calm and steady, just like his Quirk. Kageko could feel its subtle pull even before he spoke.
She moved first, letting the shadows wrap around her, pulling her into their darkness. It would have looked like she disappeared to anyone else, but Shinso knew better. He'd been up against her tricks too many times.
"Stop," Shinso commanded, his voice firm.
Kageko felt the pull, that familiar urge to obey, but she resisted. She'd trained too hard to let his Quirk get to her. She pushed back, letting the shadows shield her, and reappeared behind him, whispering, "You'll have to do better than that."
Shinso didn't flinch, just gave her a slight smirk. "You're getting faster, Kageko," he said, sounding genuinely impressed. "But you rely too much on those shadows."
She paused, considering what he said. He was right, of course. The shadows were her strength, but they were also her weakness. She knew she had to find a balance if she wanted to be a real hero.
"You're not wrong," she admitted, stepping back into the fading light. "But don't think you're the only one with things to work on."
Shinso chuckled softly. "Wouldn't dream of it," he replied, the competitive edge in his voice something they both enjoyed.
Flashback:
Later, after the training session had ended and night had fully settled in, Kageko and Shinso found themselves sitting on the rooftop, the city lights twinkling below. Kageko hugged her knees to her chest, staring out at the sprawling cityscape.
"People think my Quirk is... creepy," Kageko said, breaking the comfortable silence. "It's not just the shadows; it's the way I can get into people's heads. It freaks them out."
Shinso looked over at her, his expression softer than usual. "I get it. They think I'm a villain just because I can control minds," he said quietly. "But that's why we're going to be better. We know what it's like to be on the outside."
Kageko smiled a little. "We're going to prove them all wrong," she murmured.
"You bet we are," Shinso replied, his confidence infectious.
The next day at school, Kageko and Shinso walked side by side as usual. The other students gave them a wide berth, casting wary glances their way. It was something they were used to, but that didn't make it any easier.
During lunch, a group of older students cornered them in the hallway. Kageko could see the sneers before they even opened their mouths.
"Hey, shadow freak," one of them sneered, stepping closer. "What are you hiding in those shadows? Scared we'll see what you really are?"
Kageko's fists clenched, but before she could react, Shinso stepped in front of her, staring the bully down.
"Back off," Shinso said, his voice low and steady, the kind that made people think twice.
The bully hesitated, but he wasn't ready to back down yet. "What are you gonna do? Make us your puppets?" he taunted.
Kageko let the shadows around her rise up, creating a dark aura that made the group step back. "Leave us alone," she warned, keeping her voice steady even though her heart was pounding.
Finally, the bullies backed off, muttering as they walked away. Kageko let out a slow breath, the adrenaline still running high.
"Thanks," she said to Shinso, genuinely grateful.
"Anytime," he replied, his calm demeanor back in place. Kageko knew this wouldn't be the last time they'd have to deal with something like this, but at least they had each other's backs.
After school, they headed back to the training grounds. This time, it was more relaxed, just the two of them sparring casually, enjoying the comfort of each other's company.
As the sun set, casting long shadows across the field, they both sat down on the grass to catch their breath. "Do you ever wonder if we'll really make it as heroes?" Kageko asked, her voice quiet as she looked up at the sky.
Shinso was silent for a moment before he spoke. "I don't wonder, Kageko. I know we will. We've come too far to turn back now."
She smiled at that, feeling a warmth in his words that helped quiet the doubts in her mind. "Thanks, Shinso," she said softly. "I don't think I could do this without you."
"You're stronger than you think," Shinso replied, with a rare smile. "But yeah, we're a team. We've always got each other's backs."
They sat there in comfortable silence, the darkness around them feeling more like a friend than something to fear.
Present Day
Years passed, and Kageko's bond with Shinso only grew stronger, despite the distance that had grown between them when Shinso started at U.A. High School in his first year. Kageko had stayed behind, training and honing her skills, waiting for the right moment. Now, as a third-year, she was finally joining him at U.A., stepping into a world that had already been his for two years.
As she stood at the gates of U.A. High School, a mix of excitement and nerves churned in her stomach. This was her first day, but she felt ready, especially knowing Shinso was already there.
"Ready for your first day?" Shinso asked, his voice steady, a hint of a smile on his lips as he looked over at her.
"Always," Kageko replied, her determination solid. She'd been waiting for this moment for a long time.
Together, they walked through the gates. Shinso had already faced many of the challenges at U.A., but now it was Kageko's turn. The past had shaped them, and now they were finally on the same path. And with Shinso by her side, Kageko knew she could handle whatever came her way.
