Ishana’s Private Chambers,
(Mid morning)
The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across Ishana’s chambers, the golden light filtering through the intricately carved lattice windows. The soft glow did little to soothe her troubled mind. Ishana paced back and forth, her hands wringing together as she tried to make sense of the whirlwind of emotions crashing within her.
Kanha. His name had become a bitter mantra in her thoughts, one she couldn’t seem to escape. His presence was a constant reminder of everything slipping out of her control. Every glance, every smile, every flirtatious word he shared with her sisters only tightened the coil of frustration in her chest. It was as if he was deliberately trying to unnerve her, and to her dismay, it was working.
She paused by the window, looking out at the palace gardens where she could see Aarya sitting alone, lost in her thoughts. Ishana didn’t need to guess what was on her sister’s mind—Arjun. Aarya’s feelings for him were becoming more apparent each day, and while Ishana was happy for her sister, it also stirred something darker within her. A sense of loss, perhaps, or envy for the simplicity of Aarya’s emotions. Everything was changing around her, and she felt powerless to stop it.
Ishana clenched her jaw, forcing herself to look away from Aarya. Why did it seem like everyone around her was moving forward, while she was stuck in place, fighting against a current she couldn’t control? Kanha was at the heart of it, pushing her boundaries, making her feel things she didn’t want to feel. It was infuriating how easily he could unsettle her, how effortlessly he made her question everything she had so carefully built.
And then there was the memory of that mysterious lady, the one who had once appeared in her life like a shadow, offering guidance and help when Ishana needed it most. In Hastinapur, the lady’s presence had been a source of comfort, a secret weapon in Ishana’s arsenal. But here, in this palace where everything felt like it was slipping through her fingers, the lady was nowhere to be found. The absence of her enigmatic ally only deepened Ishana’s sense of isolation.
She pressed her palms against her temples, trying to calm the storm of thoughts swirling in her mind. She couldn’t afford to lose control, not now. There was too much at stake. But the constant tension, the frustration of things not going her way, was wearing her down. It was as if she was being pulled in every direction, her carefully laid plans unraveling one thread at a time.
The door to her chambers creaked open slightly, and one of her handmaidens peeked in, concern evident on her face. “My lady, are you alright?”
Ishana forced a smile, nodding briefly. “I’m fine. I just need some time alone.”
The handmaiden hesitated but eventually nodded and closed the door, leaving Ishana once again in solitude. The brief interruption, however, had done little to ease her troubled mind. She needed to get away, to find a place where she could think clearly, where she wasn’t constantly bombarded by reminders of everything she was trying so hard to avoid.
