Regulus leaned back in his chair, smirking. "Can't keep a secret, can he?"

That afternoon, outside the castle, Gryffindor and Slytherin students lined up in two rows, broomsticks by their sides. Madam Hooch, with her hawk-yellow eyes and short, severe haircut, strode purposefully down the line.

"Good afternoon, class," she said sharply.

"Good afternoon, Madam Hooch," the students chorused.

"Welcome to your first flying lesson," she announced. "What are you waiting for? Everyone step to the left side of your broomstick. Come on now, hurry up. Stick your right hand over the broom and say, 'Up.'"

James grinned broadly. "Flying class—now we're talking!"

The class echoed, "Up!"

Harry's broom responded immediately, leaping into his hand.

"Nice!" Harry said, grinning.

James nodded in approval. "And he's a natural. Future Quidditch player, that is."

Hermione watched Harry closely as the lesson continued. Meanwhile, Draco barked, "Up!" and his broomstick flew to his hand. He smirked triumphantly.

Ron, on the other hand, struggled. "Up. Up!"

Madam Hooch frowned. "With feeling!"

Hermione, concentrating intently, repeated, "Up. Up. Up," until her broomstick slowly lifted.

Ron, frustrated, shouted, "Up!!" His broom shot up abruptly and smacked him on the nose. "Ooh!"

Harry laughed.

"Shut up, Harry," Ron muttered, though he couldn't help but laugh along after a moment.

"Now," Madam Hooch instructed, "once you've got hold of your broom, mount it. Grip it tight—you don't want to be sliding off the end." The class complied, mounting their broomsticks. "When I blow my whistle, kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your broom steady, hover for a moment, then lean forward slightly and touch back down. On my whistle. Three, two..."
