An hour later, they were sitting in Tom’s car in Davenport, looking out at the ocean and Rangitoto island in the distance. The sun was just beginning to form a dramatic sunset and Lizzie wondered if life could get any better. She took a bite of her Burger Fuel burger. Talk about heaven on earth. She looked over at Tom who was watching her and smiling.

“What?”

He smiled wider, “I love it, that you love food.”

Lizzie smiled, “I love, that you love, that I love food.”

Tom laughed and then leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. Her stomach flipped. She loved that Tom was so affectionate. Adam had never been like that, so she wasn’t used to it. Tom seemed to find constant opportunities to caress or kiss her. It made her want to throw him into the backseat all over again. Instead she slowly ate her burger and gave him shy smiles.

Her phone pinged and she pulled it out. It was a text from Cynth: So how is it going? XOX

Lizzie apologised to Tom that it was just her friend checking in on her and she’d better reply before she worried. She quickly wrote back: Tom is a total dream. I’m having a blast.

Cynth replied immediately: Have fun riding your Ferrari. See if you can rev his torque higher than last time.

Lizzie snorted with laughter and then quickly put her phone away. Tom raised an eyebrow.

“Ah Cynth just had some suggestions.”

“For?”

Lizzie’s cheeks burned, “Don’t worry about it.”

He smirked but didn’t press her.  Lizzie’s phone pinged again. She dug it out. Another text from Cynth: Ryan can’t picture what an adonis looks like. Please send a picture of Tom so I can stop googling AI images of Chris Martin spliced with Alexander Skarsgard.

Lizzie laughed again. She looked at Tom. “If we send her a photo I think she might leave us alone.”

He nodded and she held out her camera. He pulled her close and they smiled. She showed him the photo. “Send it to me?”

She nodded, “Number?”

He read out his number and she sent it.

While he waited, he gazed at her, “I never thought it would be so hard to find someone.”

Lizzie giggled, “I know, right? I kicked myself so many times that I didn’t just text you my number, like a normal person.”

Tom’s phone pinged and he looked at the photo for a minute. “She’s right, we do look great together.”

Lizzie smiled and he put his phone away. Tom tidied up their rubbish and took it out the bin. Lizzie liked that he was tidy. He just seemed to have his shit together. She bet Tom was going to be a great dad too. When he got back into the car he leaned over and kissed her gently on the lips. He smiled and leaned back, “Sorry I just don’t think I can stop touching you. I’ve been thinking about you every day for so long now.”

She smiled shyly.

“You ready to come home with me?”

Lizzie nodded. She knew he meant to meet his parents, but she hoped he was also meaning to stay the night. She didn’t want to presume, or give him the wrong impression. She didn’t do these things lightly, but with him, well there was not even a hint of self control. As they dove down the winding streets Tom cleared his throat, “So what do your parents think about the baby?”

Lizzie’s face went dark. Tom glanced at her, “Do they know?”

Lizzie nodded, not sure how to word it. “My family is complicated.”
