Nikolai Lantsov / Sturmhond

Nikolai Lantsov, known as Sturmhond and as a daring and charming privateer, is the second son of the throne of Ravka. Growing up in the opulent confines of the royal palace, he was overshadowed by his older brother, the first son and heir to the throne. While Nikolai exhibited a natural charisma and leadership ability, his brother, a pampered favourite of their parents, indulged in excess and arrogance. Nikolai's identity is shaped by his ability to disguise his lineage and live a life unbound by the expectations of royalty.

Although he finds excitement and purpose as a privateer, deep down, he harbours a desire to prove to his kingdom that he is a more fitting ruler than his brother. His ultimate goal is to seek redemption for Ravka, to bring prosperity to his people while forging a new identity as a leader.

Nikolai's relationship with his older brother is strained, filled with envy and disappointment. Their rivalry fuels Nikolai's ambition but also persists as a painful reminder of what he left behind.

Amora Sovic

Amora was born into a family of traders in Ketterdam, a city known for its thriving commerce and dark underbelly. From a young age, she felt the weight of her parents' high expectations and the constant pressure to conform to their vision of success. Her father is a stern businessman, while her mother is a more emotional but passive figure in her life. Their relationship has been strained, filled with arguments that revolve around Amora’s desire for independence and her parents’ desire to control her future.

The firepox outbreak escalated quickly, causing panic and societal upheaval in Ketterdam. In the midst of the chaos, feeling both suffocated by her family and a deep-seated need to explore the world beyond her home, Amora made the decision to flee. She took what little she could carry and blended into the throng of desperate citizens leaving the city, unwilling to remain in a place that felt so stifling and dangerous.

Tamar Kir-Bataar

Tamar Kir-Bataar is the twin sister of Tolya Yul-Bataar and a Heartrender. She is a former member of Sturmhond's crew. Later, Tamar becomes a member of the Soldat Sol, a militia dedicated to protecting the Apparat and the Sun Summoner. After the Ravkan civil war, Tamar became the captain of Nikolai Lantsov's intelligence network.

Her mother was a Grisha stationed near the Shu Han border, and her father was a Shu Han mercenary. The twins wanted to join the Priestguard as children, but since they would not allow a woman in their order, Tolya also did not join. After their mother's death, the twins left for Novyi Zem with their father so they would not get drafted into the Second Army. Both twins were raised in the church and learned to read liturgical Ravkan.
