You either love them or you hate them.
They're little words who's spellings can make or break a sentence. They make all the difference in the world. Every writer has at least misused them once. Here's a list of words I see commonly misspelled around wattpad, how they are misused and how they can be corrected.
Your vs. You're
Your - belonging or associated with someone.
Correct use: "Get your crap together." Harry hissed.
Incorrect use: "Harry, * your *nice." the fan said.
You're - A contraction for "you are"
Correct use: "You're not going to the movies with us." Brittany said as she popped her gum.
Incorrect use: "You dropped *you're* hat!" Liam shouted.
There vs. Their
There- in or at a location
Correct use: "I will be there to pick you up at 4." Olivia replied.
Incorrect use : They had to leave so early they didn't brush *there* teeth.
Their - belonging or associated to multiple or a group of people
Correct use: Michael and Tina paid their bill before leaving.
Incorrect use: "I'll be *their* for you!" we sang at the top of our lungs as we watched Friends.
To vs. Too
To - expressing direction or motion
Correct use: We had to walk to the store for milk.
Incorrect use: "There is *to* much salt in this pasta." Niall whined.
Too - also or expressing agreement
Correct use: "You like carrots? Me too!" Louis exclaimed.
Incorrect use: "I want *too* cuddle you." he rasped.
Here vs. Hear
Here - in at, or to a present position or place
Correct use : I ask myself what I'm I doing here.
Incorrect use : "He can't *here*." Zayn explained.
Hear - to perceive sound with the ear, to be aware of something
Correct use: I can hear the bells.
Incorrect use: "You are not supposed to be be *hear*." Abbey whispered.
Bear vs. Bare
Bear - to support or carry, be able to handle something
Correct use: "I can't bear to look at him!" Anne sobbed.
Incorrect use: My fingernails are *bear* this week.
Bare - lacking proper clothing or covering
Correct use: Harry stood in the bathroom doorframe completely bare with a smirk on his face.
Incorrect use: He can't *bare* the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Wrap vs. Rap
Wrap- to cover or inclose.
Correct use: I have to wrap his birthday present.
Incorrect use: I died laughing as Justin attempted to *wrap*.
Rap - to strike or hit something, to talk casually with someone, a form or musical poetry
Correct use; Ed Sheeran's music is a combination or indie and acoustic music with a little touch of rap.
Incorrect use: "Please *rap* a towel around your waist!" I shrieked
Waste vs. Waist
Waste - to use something carelessly
Correct use: "Niall doesn't waste food." Liam explained.
Incorrect use : I need to measure the model's *waste*.
Waist- part of the body below the ribs and above the hips.
Correct use: Jude placed his hands around my waist as we slow danced.
Incorrect use: "You are a *waist* of space!" Taylor scoffed.
