AlexanderI never understood the importance of having a birthday party before.
Hence, I don't think I've actually had one. Ever.
And I'm serious about that. My parents were never home to throw me one, and I was too young to invite people around on my own.
Plus, what parent would let their child hangout without parental supervision under the age of like, thirteen?
And so, whenever mine or one of my sisters' birthdays came around, it was just the three of us and a few cupcakes that I bought at the grocery store with whatever money I saved up.
It wasn't until I was a bit older and I started seeing the rest of my family that I understood how much we were short handing ourselves all those years.
So instead of sitting at home with a few cupcakes and candles, I get to spend my birthday this year in box seats at a football game with all of my cousins, proudly watching one of them down on the field.
I have my sisters by my side, Octavia on my lap, and we're up as the clock dwindles down to halftime. I'd say my birthday is going pretty well so far.
"Alex," my baby cousin stirs on my lap. "I want to see you play."
My heart warms at the admission and I start to wonder why they've never seen any of my games before. I know I go to school back in Boston but I do travel around this area.
"I'll have to ask you mom about that." I notice the tips of her ears turning red and grab her ear muffs off the counter in front of us. "But I would love to see you at one of my games O." I tell her and slip the ear muffs onto her little head.
"Yay! Mommy even bought me your jersey for my birthday. It's too big but that's okay!" Her eyes light up as her head tilts towards me.
I don't think I can put into words how much I love this girl. She's only two but she's definitely stolen my heart.
She scrambles up to her feet and I hold her so she doesn't fall off the chair. Hugging me, she talks to her mom. Or shouts. "Mommy! Mommy! Can we please go see one of Alex's games? Pleeeeease?"
Her plea is heard by basically everyone in here and my eyes dart to Jasmine, who's been fake moping ever since Octavia ran to me first today.
Emery walks over with a hot basket of chicken tenders and fries which takes my attention away from whatever she says to her daughter. In the midst of my snacking I realize that my small conversion has distracted me from the game in front of us.
Every year since my sisters and I have been coming to watch Jackson play I've tried my hardest to pay attention to the entirety of the game.
Especially the last few years. This is the only game I get to watch in person now that I'm busy with hockey back at school.
On the last drive of the half Jackson runs it in for a touchdown, putting his team back in the lead before they head to the locker room. Octavia goes crazy in my lap and the same can be said for everyone else in the room.
For a while after that everything settles down. Emery takes Octavia off my lap and I just occupy myself with small talk. I'm in the midst of a conversation with Jackson's sister Rosalie, who's only a few months older than me, when Emery voices an announcement.
"So, I know most of you guys aren't coming back to the house after the game, but uhm...Octavia wanted to say something since you're all here." she hoists Octavia higher onto her hip whispering into her ear.
