Better - Khalid

Evie: You don't seem to be doing much better than they are. You're also on your phone too Alex.

Me: Well my sisters are glued to theirs and I miss you. What else am I supposed to do?

Evie: Tell Emery to take all your phones away for the night so you guys can hang out.

Her idea actually sounds plausible. I might just have to try it out for the sake of my boredom.

Me: Will do. But don't think I won't sneak another text to you soon.

Evie: I'll be waiting, handsome.

Me: Love you.

Evie: Love you too.

And that ends our conversation for the night. As I sink back into my seat on the couch the rock in my stomach grows a little larger.

I knew I was going to miss Evie the moment I dropped her off at home the night before she had to leave for the airport. What I hadn't expected was for the next few days to be practically unbearable.

For two reasons. One-my girlfriend is over a thousand miles away at the moment, and even though we've talked a bit, we haven't talked as much as I'd hoped. I actually think we're talking less. And two-not including my first day back home, my sisters have decided to find their phones more interesting than me.

So besides the short five minute text conversations I have with Evie, it's like all the women in my life are ignoring me.

But I won't blame my girlfriend for our lack of communication. Evie's parents surprised her with a family trip to Aruba the day she got back home and she's been there for the past few days, enjoying the sun.

As for my sisters, I'm sitting in the same room as them, gracing them with my presence as I rarely do because of school, and they're sitting on their phones not talking to me.

It's got me thinking, "What's so interesting?"

"Hmm?" Jasmine is the first to look up, chewing on the inside of her cheek. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about how I've been home for almost a week now and I feel like we've done nothing together. I've spent more time with my old teammates than I have with you two." I tell them as Eden finally looks up. "So what's got your attention?"

"Nothing," Eden's response comes quicker than I thought. She shoots a glance over to Jasmine and both of them lower their phones to their laps. "You're right, we have been on our phones. We're sorry."

I give her a weird look. She blew that off way too quickly, but right now I couldn't care less, I somehow just got my sisters to put down their stupid phones.

Jasmine exaggerates a sigh and kicks her feelings up onto the couch, "Look at us, it's New Years Eve Eve and we're sitting in our cousin's house doing nothing. Emery, save us!"

I hear footsteps coming from behind me and turn around to see that it is in fact Emery who walked into the room. "Help save you from what?"

"Boredom." The three of us spit out in unison.

She laughs to herself, "Well it's a good thing I came down here then. Get dressed, we're going out to dinner."

Jasmine squeals at the idea and is off the couch in seconds, storming up the stairs quickly, but also quietly. Emery has spent the last forty minutes putting Octavia to bed.

"I love that you spoil us." Eden walks up and tells her in a low voice.

"I love spoiling you guys." she smiles.
