I Love You, I'm Sorry - Gracie Abrams

EvieThe sky is colored in shades of grey and a mass of clouds when Alex and I walk out of the restaurant.
The air is much cooler than it was yesterday, and the city of Detroit was back to normal after some abnormally warm temperatures in the upper forties yesterday.
The sun beams through the overcasting clouds as the two of us walk the riverfront on the way back to the car. All day Alex has shown me around the city like I'm a tourist.
Which isn't exactly a lie, I'd wanted to explore the place where he grew up, put images to the stories he's told me about growing up.
I'd wanted to remember it because it wasn't about the bad things he didn't want to talk about, it was stories about all the other times. Like his high school where he led his team to the state championship his senior year, or the diner he and sisters went to religiously every weekend for breakfast.
So far in my three days here I've tried about every Detroit classic, that included a stomach ache-inducing coney hotdog, shawarma, Boston coolers, and now pizza.
I'll admit, it was some pretty good pizza. But, "I don't think it beats New York."
Alex shrugs at me but agrees. "Anything else you want to do?"
I look at him like he's some over-efficient tour guide who wants to get through everything as quickly as possible. "We'll finish exploring another day Alex. I think everything we did today is enough." I sigh and lean into his side, hugging his bicep.
I observe the people we walk by, some going on jogs, others walking their dogs, I get lost in the fact that all these other people have their own lives. And I know nothing about any of them.
I've always found that aspect of life interesting. I'm in my own world, everyone else is in theirs.
"The other half of your gift came in last night," Alex mentions as he unlocks his car in front of us.
I turn back to him, "Other half? There's another part of my gift?"
"There is." he nods. "I actually think I like it better if I'm being honest."
The smirk on his face as he gets in gets me very excited for what could be waiting for me back at his house.
The drive back to his place is no more than twenty five, karaoke filled, minutes. My vocal cords are strained by the end of it, but I still have the energy to practically squeal the second I unwrap the box waiting for me.
"Oh my God!" I flip the item around to examine the rest of the detailing and get a laugh out of the customization on the back. "You didn't."
Alex laughs besides me, "I did."
In my hands is a thick white jacket, sewn on is the viper mascot of our school and the recognizable C-patch that Alex wears on his jersey. On the back is his last name, Grant, but stitched on after is bold, red lettering that looks like it's supposed to be handwriting.
After his last name there's an apostrophe and the word Girlfriend below it, making the back of the jacket read out Grant's Girlfriend.
"You like it?" His question comes with a smile.
"I don't just like it Alex, I fucking love it!" I look up at him and wrap my arms over his shoulders immediately, keeping the jacket clasped in my hand. "I'll make sure to wear it at every game from now on." I promise.
