"Why am I like this?" Alex sighs out the question as I close the door to his room.

It's been a few hours since Alex's mom left. After his little moment in the room afterwards we spent the rest of the night relaxing downstairs, busying ourselves with movies and popcorn to pass the time.

I plop down beside him on the comforter and roll onto my stomach to face him. "You're like this because you have a big heart, Alex." And that's definitely not the worst thing in the world.

"Yeah, well my big heart usually sets me up for disappointment most times." Alex grabs the throw pillow from under his head and rests it over his stomach.

"That can't possibly be true," I object and stare him down because that sounds ridiculous. His eyes stay on mine and it's clear that he doesn't believe me. "Well I think you should give her a chance." I voice my opinion even though he has no right to take it into consideration.

"Why's that?"

I prop myself onto my elbows as his arm rests flatly on the open space of the comforter in between us. "I mean, she came all this way to talk to you Alex." I mention that first. "She defied your father by not telling him where she was going, and quite honestly I think she's done with him."

"You think she's done with him? Like ready for a divorce?" he questions me.

I nod back at him. "I do. I think that she's trying to make things right with all of you." I say. "And if not completely right I think she's at least genuinely trying to make things a lot better between you guys." I add on.

My words are honest.

Because if I was in her shoes and I wanted to make things right with my kids, I'd do anything to try and make amends.

"I know it's another big decision to make, but relax." I outline one of the tattoos on his forearm with my nail. "Important decisions take time, not 24 hours." I remind him because I can feel the tension in his body.

I keep my eyes on him as his stray to the ceiling, the gears turning in his head as I continue to draw over his tattoos at a soothing pace.

Exhaustion starts to weigh down my eyelids and after a moment I decide to tuck myself under the covers, urging Alex to do the same. "C'mon. I know you don't want to but you need to give that brain up there a night off, Alex."

My hand crawls into his hair as his arm falls loosely over my hip. "I know," he whispers. Sighing he repeats it again, this time a bit stronger. "I know."

I lean over and press my lips against his, leaving this whole day off on a short and sweet note. Rolling over onto my back I stare up at the ceiling as the two of us relinquish into silence.

I know I just told Alex to turn his brain off but mine is going a thousand miles per hour. I don't understand the full depth of Alex's situation with his mom, but I know enough to know he's going to be thinking this over for a while.

On top of all the other things he's probably trying to figure out between his mom, the remainder of the season, Aiden's tutoring—the list goes on.

Speaking of Aiden's tutoring, I haven't even talked to Alex about it since I first mentioned it. Mostly due to the fact that I haven't been able to get the girl on the phone.

I'm not surprised though, we do have our chats at work and she's told me that if she could live on the beach without any electronics she would do so.

But I did save her from a frat party a few weeks ago and even if I didn't accept it in the moment, maybe she does owe me a favor.
