Chapter 3: An Unexpected Threat

The man entered the farmhouse slowly, his eyes scanning the room. Keava could tell from his stance that he was experienced, someone who had survived long enough to be dangerous. She motioned for Sophia to stay hidden, then silently rose to her feet, her weapon at the ready.

The man's eyes narrowed when he saw her. "You alone?" he asked, his voice rough and cold.

"Just passing through," Keava replied evenly, her gaze locked onto his.

The man smirked, his grip tightening on the rifle. "This place is mine now. You're trespassing."

Keava's expression didn't waver. "We don't want any trouble. We'll leave."

But the man shook his head. "Too late for that. You and the girl-" He paused, his eyes flicking to where Sophia was hiding. "-you belong to me now."

Keava's eyes hardened. "Over my dead body."

The man's smirk faded, replaced by a sneer of contempt. "That can be arranged."

Before he could make a move, Keava lunged, her prosthetic arm swinging with deadly force. The man's eyes widened in shock as the mechanical limb connected with his weapon, sending it clattering to the ground. He stumbled back, reaching for a knife at his belt, but Keava was faster.

She grabbed him by the collar, her grip unyielding. "You picked the wrong fight," she hissed, slamming him against the wall. The man struggled, but Keava's strength was overwhelming.

Sophia watched in awe and fear as Keava subdued the man, her movements precise and brutal. In a matter of seconds, it was over. The man lay unconscious on the floor, his breath ragged but alive.

Keava turned to Sophia, her expression unreadable. "Let's go," she said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still coursing through her veins.

Sophia nodded, her heart pounding. They quickly left the farmhouse, heading back into the woods. As they walked, Sophia couldn't help but glance back at the farm, the place that had once been a symbol of hope now tainted by violence.

"Keava?" Sophia's voice was small, uncertain.

"Yes?"

"Thank you... for saving me."

Keava looked down at her, the faintest hint of a smile touching her lips. "You don't have to thank me. We're in this together."

Sophia smiled back, her trust in Keava now absolute. Together, they would face whatever came next.
