Chapter 4: The Prison

After months on the road, surviving countless dangers and growing closer as a makeshift family, Keava and Sophia finally found themselves standing before the prison. It was a formidable structure, the high fences and watchtowers offering a sense of security that neither had felt in a long time.

Sophia's heart leapt in her chest as she recognized the figures moving along the perimeter-Rick, Glenn, Carol. Her mother.

"Mom!" Sophia cried out, tears streaming down her face as she ran towards the gate.

Carol turned, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Sophia?" she gasped, sprinting towards her daughter. They met at the gate,

Carol enveloping Sophia in a tearful embrace.

Keava hung back, watching the reunion with a bittersweet smile. This was what she had fought for, what had kept her going. But now that Sophia was safe, she felt an ache deep within her chest-a sense of loss, of no longer being needed.

As the gates opened to let them in, Rick approached Keava, his expression one of gratitude and curiosity. "You must be Keava," he said, extending his hand. "Sophia's told us a lot about you."

Keava shook his hand, her grip firm. "Just doing what I could to keep her safe."

"We owe you a lot," Rick continued, his gaze sincere. "Please, come inside. There's room for you here."

But Keava hesitated. This wasn't her place. She had done her duty, and now it was time to move on. "I appreciate the offer, but I should be going."

Sophia, who had been clinging to her mother, turned sharply. "No! You can't leave, Keava! You're... you're my family now too."

Keava's heart twisted at the plea in Sophia's voice. She glanced at Carol, who was watching with a mix of gratitude and uncertainty.

"Please stay," Sophia begged, tears welling up in her eyes again. "I don't want to lose you too."

Keava took a deep breath, weighing her options. She had always been a lone wolf, but leaving Sophia now felt wrong, like abandoning a part of herself.

Rick stepped in, his voice gentle. "You don't have to decide right now. Stay the night, think it over."

Keava nodded slowly. "Alright. One night."

But even as she said the words, she knew that one night might turn into something much longer. And as they walked through the gates into the safety of the prison, Keava felt the weight of the decision she was about to make.
