The next morning, Thebes awoke to an uneasy calm. The city was on edge, its citizens and soldiers alike aware that the threat of the Shadowed Serpents loomed ever closer. Emily had barely slept, her mind constantly replaying the events of the past few days. The failed attack on the supply depot, the infiltration at the outpost, the missing informants—each incident added to her growing sense of dread.
As she walked through the palace corridors, Emily noticed the tension in the air. Guards stood at every corner, their eyes scanning for any sign of danger. Servants moved quickly and quietly, avoiding eye contact as they went about their duties. Even the usually bustling palace seemed quieter, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.
Emily was on her way to meet with Amenhotep and Ptolemy in the war room when she was intercepted by a messenger. The young man, clearly out of breath from running, handed her a sealed scroll with the Pharaoh's insignia.
"Urgent news from Ramses II," the messenger said, bowing slightly before hurrying off to deliver more messages.
Emily broke the seal and unrolled the scroll. The message inside was brief, but its contents sent a chill down her spine:
**"Meet me in the inner sanctum. We have a traitor in our midst. Trust no one."**
Emily's heart pounded in her chest. A traitor within their ranks? It was a possibility she had considered but hoped would never come to pass. She quickly made her way to the inner sanctum, a secluded chamber deep within the palace where only the most trusted advisors and the Pharaoh himself could enter.
When she arrived, she found Ramses II already there, pacing the room with a look of deep concern etched on his face. Amenhotep stood beside him, his expression equally troubled. Ptolemy was conspicuously absent.
"Emily," Ramses II said, his voice grave. "We've just received disturbing intelligence. It appears that someone within our inner circle has been feeding information to the Shadowed Serpents. This could explain the recent breaches in our defenses."
Emily felt a surge of anger and betrayal. "Do we know who it is?"
Ramses II shook his head. "Not yet. The information was obtained by one of our remaining informants, who managed to intercept a communication between the traitor and the enemy. The message was heavily coded, but it was clear enough to confirm our worst fears."
Amenhotep stepped forward. "We need to be extremely careful. If the traitor realizes we're onto them, they could accelerate their plans—or worse, flee and join the Shadowed Serpents directly."
Emily nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. "We need to gather more information discreetly. If we confront the wrong person, we could tip off the real traitor."
Ramses II agreed. "I've ordered increased surveillance on all members of the inner circle. In the meantime, we'll need to carry on as if nothing has changed. The traitor must believe they're still operating in the shadows."
As they discussed their next steps, Emily couldn't help but think of Ptolemy. He had always been one of the Pharaoh's most loyal advisors, but his absence now was suspicious. She didn't want to believe he could be involved, but in times like these, trust was a luxury they couldn't afford.
"I'll start by reviewing all recent communications and reports," Emily suggested. "There might be something we've overlooked—something that could point us in the right direction."
Amenhotep nodded. "And I'll increase the security around key locations, especially those we know the Shadowed Serpents are interested in. If the traitor is feeding them information, we need to make it as difficult as possible for them to act on it."
