The Langston estate was even more impressive than Mia had imagined. The sprawling mansion sat atop a hill, surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens and high, wrought-iron gates that spoke of both wealth and the need for security. As Mia drove up the long, winding driveway, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She had been in plenty of fancy homes during her time on the force, but there was something different about this place—something that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.
She parked her car in front of the grand entrance and took a moment to steady herself before stepping out. The sky was clear, but the air was thick with the kind of humidity that promised a storm later in the day. As she approached the massive wooden doors, they swung open as if by magic, revealing a tall, thin man in a crisp suit.
"Ms. Stone," the man said with a slight bow. "Welcome. Mr. Langston is expecting you. Please, follow me."
Mia nodded and followed the man through the grand foyer, her boots echoing off the marble floors. The inside of the mansion was just as extravagant as the exterior—crystal chandeliers, priceless art on the walls, and furniture that looked like it belonged in a museum. It was the kind of place where you felt like you should whisper, even if you were the only one in the room.
The man led her down a long hallway and stopped in front of a set of double doors. "Mr. Langston is inside," he said, opening the doors for her.
Mia stepped into what appeared to be a study—dark wood paneling, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a massive desk that dominated the room. Behind the desk sat Robert Langston, the man himself. He looked exactly as she'd expected—powerful, commanding, and utterly in control. His salt-and-pepper hair was neatly combed, and his suit was impeccable, but it was his eyes that caught Mia's attention. They were sharp, calculating, and she could tell that he didn't miss a thing.
"Ms. Stone," Langston greeted her with a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Thank you for coming."
"Mr. Langston," Mia replied with a nod, taking a seat in one of the leather chairs in front of the desk. "Your associate mentioned that you needed my help."
"Yes," Langston said, leaning back in his chair. "I won't waste your time, Ms. Stone. My daughter, Emily, is in danger. I need someone with your skills to keep her safe. You come highly recommended."
Mia didn't miss the flicker of something—worry, perhaps—behind Langston's composed exterior. "I appreciate the compliment, but I'm going to need more details before I can agree to anything."
"Of course," Langston said, steepling his fingers. "There have been threats made against Emily's life. Threats that I take very seriously. I've already increased security around the estate, but I want someone with experience, someone I can trust, to be with her at all times."
Mia studied Langston's face, trying to read between the lines. "And Emily? How does she feel about having a bodyguard?"
Langston's expression hardened slightly. "Emily is... independent. She doesn't always understand the risks she faces because of who she is. That's why I need someone who can handle her, someone who won't back down when she pushes back."
Mia raised an eyebrow. "So, you're hiring me to protect her from herself as much as from any outside threats?"
"If necessary, yes," Langston admitted. "Emily can be difficult, but I trust you'll be able to manage."
Before Mia could respond, the door to the study burst open, and in walked the very subject of their conversation—Emily Langston. She was tall, with the kind of effortless beauty that made heads turn wherever she went. Her blonde hair was styled in loose waves, and she was dressed in designer clothes that screamed wealth. But it was the look on her face that caught Mia off guard—a mixture of boredom and irritation.
"Dad, are you seriously going through with this?" Emily demanded, barely glancing at Mia before turning her attention to her father. "I don't need a babysitter."
"Emily," Robert Langston said with a tone that brooked no argument, "we've discussed this. It's for your own safety."
Emily rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "I'm twenty years old, not a child. I don't need some ex-cop following me around, telling me what to do."
Mia remained silent, observing the dynamic between father and daughter. It was clear that Emily was used to getting her way, but there was also a hint of something else—fear, maybe, masked by her defiance.
"Ms. Stone is here to ensure your safety," Langston said, his tone firm. "Whether you like it or not, this is happening."
Emily finally turned to look at Mia, her blue eyes sizing her up. "So, you're the one they hired to keep me in line? You don't look like much."
Mia didn't rise to the bait. "Looks can be deceiving," she replied coolly.
Emily smirked, clearly unimpressed. "Whatever. Just stay out of my way, and we won't have any problems."
"Emily," Langston warned, but Mia raised a hand to stop him.
"It's fine," Mia said, locking eyes with Emily. "I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to do a job. And whether you like it or not, I'm going to do it."
For a moment, there was a tense silence as the two women stared each other down. Then, with a huff, Emily turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Langston sighed, rubbing his temples. "I apologize for my daughter's behavior, Ms. Stone. She's... strong-willed."
Mia stood up, her decision made. "I've dealt with worse. I'll take the job."
Langston looked relieved. "Thank you. I'll have James arrange everything you'll need."
As Mia walked out of the study, she couldn't help but wonder what she had just signed up for. Emily Langston was clearly more than just a spoiled rich girl—there was something deeper, something Mia would need to uncover if she was going to keep her safe.
One thing was certain: this job was going to be far from easy.
