Mia sat on the edge of her bed, her mind still reeling from the shock of waking up in Emily's room. She couldn't focus, couldn't think straight. The events of the night before were a hazy blur, but the unease in her gut told her something had gone terribly wrong.

A soft knock on her door startled her from her thoughts. Before she could respond, Emily walked in, closing the door gently behind her. She looked nervous, but there was a determination in her eyes that Mia hadn't seen before.

"Mia, we need to talk," Emily said quietly, moving closer.

Mia stood up, instinctively taking a step back, creating more distance between them. "Emily, I don't know what happened last night, but I'm not sure I want to know."

Emily's face fell, but she pressed on, her voice trembling slightly. "Mia, you deserve to know the truth. We didn't just kiss last night. We... we made love."

Mia felt like the ground had been ripped out from under her. She stared at Emily, disbelief and horror flooding through her. "What? No, that can't be right. I would have remembered that."

"I'm sorry, Mia," Emily whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "You were so out of it, but you kissed me back. You didn't stop me. I thought... I thought it was what you wanted too."

Mia's breath caught in her throat, and she felt like she was going to be sick. She hadn't just made a mistake—she had crossed a line she never imagined she could. A sense of deep shame washed over her, mingling with the confusion and regret. But the worst part, the part that made her knees almost give out, was the realization that she had betrayed the memory of someone she still held dear.

"I cheated," Mia whispered, more to herself than to Emily. Her voice broke, and she sank onto the bed, burying her face in her hands. "I cheated on my wife."

Emily froze, the air thick with tension. "Mia... I didn't know. I'm so sorry."

Mia looked up, her eyes filled with anguish. "She's gone, Emily. My wife... she died two years ago. I've been trying to move on, but I never imagined it would happen like this. I didn't want this. Not with you. Not like this."

Emily's face crumpled, her own tears spilling over. "Mia, I had no idea. I didn't mean to hurt you. I just... I care about you so much, and I thought... I thought maybe you could care about me too."

Mia shook her head, overwhelmed by the flood of emotions. "Emily, you're not hearing me. This isn't about you. It's about me, and how I've dishonored the memory of the person I loved more than anything in this world. What we did... it was wrong. It's not something I can just walk away from."

Emily stood there, her heart breaking as she watched Mia fall apart. She had wanted Mia so badly, but now that it had happened, it didn't feel anything like she had imagined. She had hurt Mia in a way she couldn't fix, and that realization crushed her.

"I'm sorry, Mia," Emily whispered again, feeling the weight of her actions settle heavily on her shoulders. "I never wanted to cause you pain."

Mia nodded slowly, the tears she had been holding back finally slipping down her cheeks. "I need some time, Emily. I need to figure out what comes next."

Emily hesitated for a moment, then turned and left the room, closing the door softly behind her. As she walked down the hall, she felt like she was walking away from something precious that she had shattered beyond repair. She had crossed a line with Mia, and now she feared that whatever they had—whatever it could have been—was lost forever.

Inside her room, Mia sat in silence, tears streaming down her face as she tried to process the reality of what had happened.
The weight of her actions felt unbearable and she knew that no matter what things would never be the same.
