The morning after

Sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room as Mia slowly opened her eyes. Her head throbbed with a dull ache, and her mouth was dry, the aftereffects of the alcohol and whatever else had been in her drink the night before. As she blinked, trying to orient herself, she realized with a jolt that this wasn't her room.

Mia sat up quickly, the blanket slipping off her bare shoulders. Panic surged through her as she recognized her surroundings—this was Emily's bedroom. She looked down, seeing that she was dressed only in her underwear. Her heart raced as fragments of the previous night came rushing back, though they were muddled and disjointed.

She remembered the club, the drinks, the kiss... and then everything after that was a blur. How had she ended up here? And why couldn't she remember how the night had ended?

Mia glanced over at the other side of the bed and froze. Emily was there, still asleep, her dark hair fanned out across the pillow, a peaceful expression on her face. The sight made Mia's stomach twist with anxiety. What had she done? What had they done?

Carefully, Mia slipped out of bed, trying not to wake Emily. She needed to get out of there, to clear her head and figure out what had happened. But as she stood up, she felt a wave of dizziness, forcing her to steady herself against the nightstand.

"Mia?" Emily's voice was groggy but alert, and Mia's heart sank. She turned slowly to see Emily watching her, a sleepy smile curling on her lips. "Good morning."

Mia swallowed hard, forcing herself to stay calm. "Morning," she replied, her voice hoarse.

Emily propped herself up on one elbow, the sheet slipping down to reveal more of her bare skin. "How are you feeling?"

"Confused," Mia admitted, looking away. "Emily, what happened last night?"

Emily's smile faltered slightly, and she sat up fully, pulling the sheet around herself. "You don't remember?"

Mia shook her head, running a hand through her tangled hair. "Not clearly. I remember the club, but after we got back here... everything's a blur."

Emily bit her lip, a flicker of uncertainty crossing her face. "We... we kissed. And then you were really out of it, so I helped you upstairs. We didn't do anything you didn't want to, Mia, I promise."

Mia's chest tightened, her mind racing. "I was drunk, Emily. I wasn't in my right mind."

"I know," Emily said quickly, her tone defensive. "I didn't push you into anything. I just... I wanted to be close to you. We kissed, and then we fell asleep. That's all."

Mia closed her eyes, trying to process everything. The fact that she was in Emily's bed, half-dressed, with no memory of how she got there, made her feel sick with regret. But the worst part was that she couldn't be sure if Emily was telling the truth—or if something more had happened while she was too impaired to consent.

"I need to go," Mia said, her voice strained as she grabbed her clothes from the floor and quickly dressed. "This... this was a mistake."

Emily's expression shifted from confusion to hurt. "Mia, please don't say that. Last night wasn't a mistake—it was real. I care about you, and I know you care about me too."

Mia shook her head, pulling on her shirt with trembling hands. "I can't do this, Emily. Whatever happened last night, it crossed a line, and we both know it. I'm your bodyguard, not... not this."

"Mia, wait—" Emily began, but Mia was already moving toward the door, her mind set on getting out of there as fast as she could.

"I need some space," Mia said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Please, just... give me some time to think."

Without waiting for a response, Mia left the room, her heart pounding in her chest as she hurried down the hall. She didn't stop until she was back in her own room, the door closed firmly behind her. Leaning against it, she finally let out the breath she had been holding, her thoughts a chaotic swirl of emotions.

Everything was a mess, and Mia didn't know how to fix it. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had lost control of the situation, and the one person she needed to protect herself from now was Emily.
