Drawing the line

The days that followed were some of the hardest Mia had ever endured. The sense of guilt and betrayal weighed heavily on her, and she knew she couldn't continue as if nothing had happened. The boundaries between her and Emily had blurred beyond recognition, and now she needed to reestablish them—stronger and clearer than ever before.

Mia avoided Emily as much as possible. She made a point to keep their interactions strictly professional, only speaking to her when necessary and keeping her responses short and to the point. She didn't want to give Emily any more false hope or lead her on in any way.

Emily, on the other hand, noticed the change immediately. The warmth and care that had once been there were replaced by coldness and distance. Every attempt she made to talk to Mia was met with a polite but firm rebuff. It was as if Mia had erected an invisible wall between them, one that Emily couldn't break through no matter how hard she tried.

One morning, after a few days of this strained silence, Emily finally cornered Mia in the kitchen. She was tired of being ignored and needed to know where they stood.

"Mia, we need to talk," Emily said, her voice edged with frustration.

Mia, who was in the middle of making coffee, didn't look up. "There's nothing to talk about, Emily."

"Yes, there is," Emily insisted, stepping closer. "You've been avoiding me ever since... that night. I get that you're upset, but you can't just shut me out like this."

Mia set her coffee mug down with a sigh, finally meeting Emily's gaze. "I'm not shutting you out, Emily. I'm setting boundaries—something I should have done from the beginning."

"Boundaries?" Emily echoed, hurt flashing across her face. "You're treating me like I'm a stranger, Mia. After everything we've been through..."

"Because we crossed a line, Emily," Mia interrupted, her voice firm but not unkind. "I crossed a line I never should have. What happened between us was a mistake—one that I take full responsibility for. But I can't let it happen again. I won't."

Emily's eyes filled with tears, and she struggled to keep her composure. "So, what? You're just going to pretend like it never happened? Like we never happened?"

Mia's expression softened, but her resolve remained strong. "We didn't happen, Emily. We made a mistake, and it's one that I deeply regret. But I can't change the past. What I can do is make sure that nothing like it happens again."

Emily wiped away a tear, her voice trembling. "I don't want to lose you, Mia. I care about you. I... I love you."

Mia closed her eyes briefly, the weight of those words heavy on her heart. "Emily, I care about you too, but not in the way you want me to. I'm your bodyguard. My job is to protect you, not to be involved in your life like this. I can't give you what you're looking for."

Emily's face crumpled as she took a shaky breath. "But I thought... I thought maybe..."

Mia shook her head gently. "It's not fair to either of us, Emily. I'm setting boundaries because it's the right thing to do—for you, and for me. You need to respect that."

There was a long, painful silence as Emily processed Mia's words. She knew deep down that Mia was right, but it didn't make the reality any easier to accept. The connection she had felt with Mia, the hope she had nurtured, all felt like they were slipping away.

"Okay," Emily finally whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I'll respect your boundaries. But it doesn't make it hurt any less."

"I know," Mia replied softly. "This isn't easy for me either. But it's what we both need."

Emily nodded, wiping her eyes once more before turning to leave the kitchen. Just before she exited, she paused and looked back at Mia. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry, Mia. I never wanted things to turn out like this."

Mia offered a small, sad smile. "Me too, Emily. Me too."

As Emily walked away, Mia let out a long, shaky breath, feeling the weight of the conversation settle over her. Setting boundaries was the right decision, but it didn't make the pain of the situation any less real. She knew that things between her and Emily would never be the same, but she also knew that it was the only way to protect both of them from further heartache.
