NO ROCKSTARS

[A VOICEMAIL I NEVER RECEIVED]

"The crowd's nice enough, but no one gets my jokes. All boxing matches end in a draw. There's still music, but there's no rockstars in heaven. I miss having something to scream for.

It isn't so bad, I guess. The neighbors are all quiet, and there's no gossip to overhear through the walls. The food's free, even if it doesn't always feed the hunger. I'd like to go back to our first date, when I paid for pizza with spare change and you looked at me like I meant something. I think you'd like the movies; the dog always lives.

My drinks are made right the first time and I never stumble home. I crawl into a made bed and don't have to wonder what tomorrow brings. I'm still trying to find someone to play cards with me, but angels don't believe in poker. Can't gamble when you're not allowed to lose.

Sometimes, I catch them smoking by the gate, though. They like these herbal cigarettes with dead leaves and no pain. I'm still getting used to the taste of getting everything we thought we wanted. Funny, I always thought it'd be sweeter.

It's a paradise, for sure, but don't be in a rush to get here, babe. I'll be at the entrance waiting for you when the party's over. Call me, and I'll pick you up. I can't wait to hear all about it.

Just don't call too soon, okay? Stay for the last song. You have to live. Live for the both of us. They've got everything here but life. Miss you. I'll be here when you get back."

eve's note: this entire piece came from a dream i had about 30 minutes ago. in it, i was at the club and received this voicemail. i woke up sobbing, reaching for a pen to write it all down. sometimes living is like that. love you.
