The sun was dipping below the terracotta roofs of Lisbon, casting a warm golden glow over the city’s historic streets. In a small café tucked away on a quiet corner, three university classmates gathered around a table littered with notebooks, laptops, and cups of espresso. The tantalizing aroma of freshly baked pastéis de nata wafted through the air, filling their nostrils with the promise of something new and exciting.

Meet the Entrepreneurs

Ana Silva.  The daughter of a local baker, Ana had grown up with the scent of freshly baked bread and pastries in her home. Her father owned a modest bakery in Alfama, where she spent most of her childhood kneading dough and learning the secrets of traditional Portuguese pastries.

Now, as a business major at the University of Lisbon, Ana was eager to combine her love for baking with her academic pursuits. Her calm demeanor and meticulous nature made her the perfect fit to handle the finances of their startup.

Carlos Mendes. Born and raised in a bustling neighborhood of Baixa, Carlos came from a family of restaurateurs. His parents owned a small, but popular, family-run restaurant. Carlos had always been fascinated by the art of cooking and the complexities of running a business.

He was the operations mastermind of the group, ensuring that everything from ingredient sourcing to baking ran smoothly. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for quality, Carlos was dedicated to maintaining the authenticity of their pastéis de nata.

Isabel Oliveira. Isabel was the daughter of a marketing executive and a freelance journalist. Growing up in a household that thrived on creativity and communication, she developed a natural talent for storytelling and branding. Isabel's infectious energy and innovative ideas made her the driving force behind their marketing strategy. She was responsible for managing their social media channels, crafting engaging content, and spreading the word about their new business venture.

Together, they were an unstoppable trio, united by their shared love for pastéis de nata and their dream of bringing this quintessential Portuguese pastry to a wider audience.

The Birth of “Nata Delights”

It all began during one of their entrepreneurship classes, where their professor challenged the students to create a viable business plan for a startup. Ana, Carlos, and Isabel had always been close friends, so it was only natural that they would team up. After a long brainstorming session over coffee, they decided to focus on something they were all passionate about: food, specifically pastéis de nata.

"We should do something that represents Lisbon, something that everyone loves," Isabel suggested as she scribbled ideas in her notebook.

Ana nodded in agreement.

"Pastéis de nata are a part of our culture. It's something people from all over the world associate with Portugal. We could make it our own, put a modern twist on it."

Carlos grinned, the wheels in his mind already turning.

"And we could offer variations—different flavors, maybe even some gluten-free or vegan options. We could cater to different tastes while keeping the traditional recipe intact."

And so, “Nata Delights” was born. The trio pooled their savings, rented a small but charming shop in Chiado, and set to work. Ana meticulously calculated their startup costs, balancing the books to ensure they wouldn’t overspend. Carlos sourced the finest ingredients and perfected their baking process, while Isabel designed a sleek logo and created an online presence for their brand.
