SpongeBob was working at the Krusty Krab, flipping patties for another order. Squidward shouted:
— Bob, is it ready yet? The customers are tired of waiting!
— Yeah, Squidward, here you go. It's just so hot today, I can barely do anything. I wish Mr. Krabs would get us an air conditioner.
— Ha! That old cheapskate Krabs? He wouldn't spend a cent to make us feel better. Don't you remember when he turned off the heater in the winter? — Squidward shook his head skeptically.
— Just wait, I'll talk to him after work. I'm sure he'll agree. Besides, I bet he's hot too.
The workday was long and exhausting due to the heat, but the guys managed. Squidward even heard someone at a table say their burger smelled like sweat.
— Good job, boys, — Mr. Krabs said. — You did great today!
— Thanks, — said Bob, though his eyes were looking for Squidward's approval.
Squidward stared at Bob, waiting for him to speak to Mr. Krabs about the air conditioner.
— Mr. Krabs...
— Yes, lad?
— Mr. Krabs, it's really hot for me and Squidward. I think our work would be better if you let us get an air conditioner.
— What?! — Mr. Krabs exclaimed, his eyes widening. — I already have an air conditioner!
— What? — the guys exchanged surprised looks.
— I'm not spending a cent on you two. If you want one, you can buy it with your own salary.
— But, Mr. Krabs, — said Squidward, — you barely pay us as it is.
— Mr. Squidward, you should be grateful you even have a job to come to.
— Yeah, just what I needed to hear, — muttered Squidward.
****Bob was watching TV, trying to beat the heat with cold drinks. He was very bored and wanted to hang out with his new friends. He called Patrick, who said it was too hot, and his brain was overheated, so he couldn't go out. Squidward decided to visit him.
— How's it going, Bob? I brought you a new drink with ice and watermelon.
— Oh, Squidward, this is amazing! I was so thirsty; I already drank everything I had.
— Want some ice cream? — Bob offered Squidward.
The guys talked a lot, and then Bob had an idea:
— Squidward, maybe I should get a pet? Like a snail?
— I don't know, I'm allergic to them. What do you need one for? They're useless, and they leave slime everywhere, — Squidward looked thoughtfully at Bob.
— I just thought, sometimes when you all are busy, I get lonely. It would be nice to have a friend living under the same roof.
Squidward smiled slightly but said nothing, turning his attention back to the TV.
The next day...
— Thanks, Patrick, for coming with me to the animal shelter. Your support means a lot, plus you can help me choose.
— I enjoy spending time with you too. And I really love animals.

— Oh, we're here already.— What do you think of him? — Bob pointed to a small python.
— I don't know, — said Patrick, — he's a bit strange. Let me get a closer look at you, little python.
— Aaa! SpongeBob, he bit me!
— Yeah, Patrick, a python isn't the best idea.
— Look at this beautiful snail, — Bob pointed to a snail.
— Yeah, the snail's actually pretty nice.
— That's it, I want her, — Bob decided.
A guard came over, opened the cage, and they were able to take the snail home.
SpongeBob and Patrick headed home, unable to stop admiring the little creature. SpongeBob was thrilled with his new pet.
— Patrick, what should I name him?
— I don't know, maybe Richard?
— How about Arnold? — suggested Bob.
— No way, SpongeBob, that's way too old-fashioned, — Patrick shook his head.
SpongeBob drifted into his childhood memories.
— Mom, look how small he is, he's soaked from the rain!
— SpongeBob, we can't take him home. He might be cute, but it's a big responsibility, son. Besides, he has a collar—oh, his name is Gary. Come on, dear, I'm sure his owner will come for him soon.
— Patrick, I know! His name is Gary!
— Gary is a great name, — Patrick exclaimed, — it's fancy enough!
— I need to buy him some food and a few toys so he won't get bored.
— Alright, SpongeBob, I'll go with you.
Patrick looked at his watch.
— Oh no, SpongeBob, I can't. I have to get to the set of my "Patrick Show." We're filming the summer episode at the beach today.
— You're not upset, right?
— No, Patrick, of course not. Go ahead, you've got work to do!
SpongeBob went to the store alone. As he approached the checkout, he didn't notice how full his cart had become.
— Hello, do you need a bag?
— Yes, and make it two!
As the cashier rang up the items, SpongeBob imagined his paycheck shrinking with each beep, but he was willing to spend all his money on his new friend.
After leaving the store, he spotted Sandy Cheeks.
— Hi, Sandy!
— Hi, SpongeBob! Where are you headed?
— I'm heading home. Patrick and I just bought me a pet. It's a snail, and his name is Gary.
— Wow! Can I come by sometime? I'd love to see him.
— Of course, Sandy, you're always welcome.
SpongeBob finally managed to carry the heavy bags home.
— Gary, I'm home!
— Meow.
— Let's see what I got you. Isn't this a wonderful bed?
— Meow.
— I think I'll put it upstairs near me.
