Chapter Ten
“Dante,” I said and opened his bedroom door. His bed duvet was thrown in half where he hadn’t made it, but his laptop bag had gone. He left without saying goodbye. That was unlike him.
Monday morning rolled around quickly. I cancelled my date with Spencer, telling him I was unwell because I just needed to be alone to think about what was happening to me. He was understanding but insisted we had dinner this evening. I wasn’t complaining, though.
Bree was out again so Frankie and I had the office to ourselves. It was quiet. I read through pages of submissions and filed them into appropriate email folders, and Frankie was doing the same.
I wanted to tell her about Z and talk about the fact that Dante had barely said two words to me all weekend. I made a promise to myself not to talk to him about any of this stuff because even if something was going on and if I was in any danger, it wasn’t worth ruining my friendship with him over. I was a big girl so could handle whatever alone.
Frankie yawned, stretching her arms up in the air. “Wanna have our tea break now?”
I nodded. “Yeah. There’s some stuff I need to talk to you about anyway.”
Her eyebrows shot up. “And you’re just telling me now?”
“Didn’t know where to start!”
She stood up and grabbed her mug. “Start anywhere.”
“I saw the letter Z with another one I couldn’t pick out in time. It was just before my laptop exploded.” My mouth popped open. “Dante is barely talking to me and thinks I’m crazy and I’m pretty sure I’m falling in love with a guy I’ve known for five minutes.”
She blinked hard. “We’re gonna need a long tea break.”
I followed Frankie to the kitchen where we made strong coffee and sat at the table. Thankfully as we were having our tea break a little earlier than usual we were the only ones in the kitchen.
“So,” she said, shaking her head. “Start with Spencer.”
I sighed, wrapping my hands around the hot mug. “I think I’m falling for him. Hard. It’s completely irrational, though. How can you love someone you barely know? Lust at first sight, sure, but love…” I shook my head. “You can’t love someone you don’t know, right?”
“Well I don’t think so, but you know how you feel.”
“It’s so much stronger than anything I’ve felt too. I cancelled our date after the laptop and Dante incident because I was so shaken up and confused about it all and it practically ripped my heart apart knowing I wouldn’t see him. How pathetic is that? God I’m annoying myself!”
Frankie laughed. “You’re not pathetic. Loving someone isn’t pathetic at all.”
“Come on, loving someone after one date is entirely pathetic. I think it’s actually the definition of pathetic.”
“Do you think it’s got something to do with whoever is haunting you?”
My eyes widened. “I’m being haunted now?”
“Well… Kinda. Some ghost or spirit is showing you all this stuff, stuff to do with Spencer. I think Katherine is Spencer’s ex.”
I chewed the inside of my mouth. “That makes sense…”
“But?”
“I don’t want her to be. If she’s the one haunting me then that means she’s no longer with us and Spencer’s ex is dead. Surely he would have told me if he had a dead ex? That’s not something to be ashamed of!”
