Chapter Four

Once my parents left, I started cleaning up. Dante cooked the whole thing so I sent him to sit down while I loaded the dishwasher. I didn’t dare look up at the window just in case those letters were there again.

“Right,” I said, and flicked the dishwasher on. “I’m calling it a night.”

“Alright, Girl.”

I leant down and kissed Dante’s cheek as I passed the living room to go to my bedroom. Closing my door, I sprinted to my bed and opened my laptop. Waiting for it to start up was almost painful. I just wanted to Google SM and see if it would give anything away.

The search engine popped up and I typed the letters in. Nothing obvious came up, just SM department stores and supermarkets. SM investments and other finance companies. Great, it means nothing, and you’re going insane! Sighing in frustration, I slammed the laptop shut and shot off the bed. I changed in a mood, pulling my clothes off and throwing them on the floor in frustration. What the hell was going on?

I didn’t want Dante to be right because that would mean it was all in my head. I also wanted him to be right so everything else would be all right. “Devon, what the hell!” Dante’s voice echoed through the flat. What?

Jumping up, I threw my dressing gown around my half-naked body and ran out. “What?”

“What did you do?” I gasped as I saw the steam rising from the dishwasher. Dante flicked it off at the wall. “It’s fucked.”

“It can’t be, we’ve only used it twice!” I pushed past him and opened the door, jumping back as the steam burst out of the dishwasher. “Maybe I put it on a hotter setting by mistake?”

“Maybe,” he grunted, and pulled the bottom shelf out.

I gasped and grabbed his arm. “Dante!” Oh God. “Look at that plate!”

He shook his head and looked at me as if I were crazy. “What?”

“That one! Just fucking look at it!” He looked where I was pointing. “Do you see it?” The letters SM were smeared in the remnants of the lemon sauce.

“What am I looking at, Girl?”

“That,” I hissed, and pointed to the letters.

“A half washed plate?” It wasn’t a half washed plate. It looked like someone had written it in the sauce with their finger.

“Someone has written that.”

“There’s only me and you here.”

“Okay, something has written it.”

He grinned wide. It was a smile full of amusement. “You think we have a ghost?”

Did I think that? It was possible. I did believe in an afterlife and ghosts, though? “Maybe.”

His smile grew wider. “Seriously, Girl? And what does this ghost want? To decorate the dirty dishes? It’s weird and the odds of making letters like that are slim, I’ll give you that, but it’s not impossible. Casper is not paying us a visit.”

My mouth dropped open as I realised SM were initials! “SM! It’s someone. I bet whoever lived here before had those initials!”

“Devon, are you high?”

“No.”

“Drunk?”

Sighing, I turned on my heel and stomped off back to my room. “Good night, Dante,” I shouted, and slammed my door. It didn’t really matter what he said anyway. I knew something was going on. There was too much for it to all be a coincidence. Was it a ghost, though?
